The students also learned about the legislative process from state Rep. Dale Kooyenga, R-Brookfield, their legislator at the State Capitol in Madison and pictured in the center. The AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers are donating 6,500 dictionaries to students at more than 130 schools statewide as part of the 9th annual "Dictionaries for Success" program. The Pioneers are a local organi- zation of AT&T employees and retirees who volunteer with various community causes. Schools in Brookfield, Waterloo, Water- town, Waukesha, Muskego, Oconomowoc, Cudahy, Green Bay and Eau Claire are among the schools that are receiving donated dictionaries from the Pioneers this year. While Black Friday has lost some of its luster to Thanksgiving evening shop- ping, it is still one of the busiest shopping days of the year. WAUKESHA — The Brookfield Common Coun- cil unanimously approved the city's $69,949,251 operat- ing budget last month. The new budget included a property tax levy increase of 1.8 percent from 2014 — $36,495,000 compared with $35,835,000 last year. Likewise, the mill rate, or price per $1,000 of assessed property value, rose to $5.51, four cents more than in 2014. "I am very pleased with our budget, and also the budget process," Brookfield Mayor Steven Ponto said. "This budget allows the city of Brookfield to continue to provide the high level of ser- vices it has been providing — and it's doing that with a minimal tax expenditure." Under the approved bud- get, the owner of a $335,000 home would pay $1,845.85 on the Brookfield portion of the tax bill, an increase of just over $13 from last year. However, according to Ponto, the average Brook- field homeowner will actual- ly save $202 on his or her tax bill next year as a result of the state's increased finan- cial support of Waukesha County Technical College. — John Holman, Special to The Freeman Brookfield council approves 2015 budget
