By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD — Size matters when considering last-minute Christmas shopping or a present for the person whose gift gives you the biggest headache. Clothes are an excellent option when you're left with one name on your Christmas shopping list. You know that feeling. It's the one per- son you push off until the very end, because when you try to think of a gift your mind tur ns to a gray haze. Clothes are where it is at for such a person, whether male or female, son or daughter, husband or wife. "The very first thing I would do, if she's never been in the store before, is to identify the size," said Dennis Ervin, sales director at Squire Fine Men's Apparel. Squire Fine Men's Apparel is located in Sendik's Towne Center at Brookfield Road and Capitol Drive in Brookfield. Ervin used to dress Jef frey R. Immelt, who is now chair man of the board and CEO of General Electric. He can help make clothing purchas- es for any man. After deter mining the size of the man who is to receive the gift, Ervin said he might also ask if the gent is war m in his clothes. Ervin said such a question does not often lead to a quizzical look. If the man in question is war m in his clothes, Ervin said he might suggest a quarter-zip knit top that coordi- nates well with a multitude of looks. "One of the other big questions is what type of clothing is your hus- band wearing day to day?" Ervin said. "Sometimes, they want to buy professional attire, and professional attire has changed somewhat." Barbara Eash antiques column 3A Aches and pains have long plagued new technological advances are helping doctors pain more rapidly than ever before. Statewide professionals, are using lasers to treat arthritis pain and dysfunction more effi- ciently by reducing the swelling and improving circulation to the affected tissues. Dr. Evans, owner of Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic in New Berlin, began using the noninvasive therapy system known as the MLS Class 4 Laser at her clinic in January of 2011. The response from patients has been phenomenal. "I have patients travelling from as far away as Sheboygan. "This is definitely the wave of the future," said Dr. Evans, who has been a practicing chiroprac- tor for more than 20 years. "With the financial constraints of the current economy and ris- ing health insurance costs, peo- ple need to get better faster." While traditional chiropractic treatments typically would take three to four months to achieve a positive outcome, now with adding laser treatments the heal- ing process is accelerated and patients are recovering in half the time. MLS Class 4 Lasers, approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration five years ago, work in what is called a dual wave pattern, meaning the device performs two functions at once on the patient's body. One wave form relieves pain while the other accelerates the healing process. "This new technology gets patient's better faster, this past year has been very exciting as I have been able to witness patient's recover in ways I hadn't seen before implementing this type of Laser therapy," Evans said. The biggest problem any clin- ician faces when treating patients who are in pain is how to safely and effectively address inflammation. "All too often, physicians want to block the inflammatory pro- cess with medications both pre- scribed and over the counter, but you need to work with it instead," she said. "This is where laser treatments make all the dif- ference. The laser accelerates the inflammatory process (i.e., heal- ing process) and this is why the patient recovers more quickly." As advances have been made with technology, Class 4 lasers have enabled chiropractic profes- sionals to venture into previously unheard of territory. Treatments were almost always ineffective for people where scar tissue had formed. Modern laser treatments have given pro- fessionals an opportunity to work through scar tissue – a scenario that has proven especial- ly beneficial for the elderly and people who have had surgery. "One of the laser wave forms actually can break up old scar tissue when paired with the cor- rect machine parameters thus allowing for greater joint motion and flexibility," Evans said. "I like to think of it as WD-40 for the joints." Walking has long been rec- ommended as a key exercise in addressing weight gain – partic- ularly for the aging population. But when a person has joint problems and pain, when walk- ing could be a beneficial exer- cise is not an option. "Our bodies are meant to move but when movement caus- es pain it is almost impossible to remain healthy and vital thru the aging process," Evans said. At Evans Chiropractic & Pain Laser Clinic, patients typ- ically undergo between 8 and 10 Laser treatments before inflammation has been ade- quately addressed and healing truly takes hold. A typical laser treatment lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, is painless, com- pletely safe and has no adverse side effects. MLS Class 4 Lasers, approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration five years ago, work in what is called a dual wave pattern, meaning the device performs two functions at once on the patient's body.
