See VETERANS, PAGE 5A 'There's something special about a veteran' St. John's Northwestern salutes those who defended America's freedoms By John Holman Special to The Freeman WAUKESHA — St. John's Northwestern Military Academy's Farrand Hall Gymna- sium was packed wall-to-wall Nov. 10 for the school's Salute to Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Academy alumni, local veterans with their families, community members and public officials, including Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas, came to honor the Americans who have volun- teered to fight for the greater good of the country and the world. "There's something special about a veter- an," said Kleefisch after the ceremony. "There's something special about an Amer- ican who — when faced with a trial, when faced with a challenge, when faced truly with the threat of death — says, 'Send me.' "That is a very unique and celebrated, honored quality, and it can only be found in members of the armed forces — those folks who are willing to literally lay down their lives for our freedom. They are a blessing to us." The ceremony placed much emphasis on history, starting with school President Jack Albert Jr.'s opening remarks. He shared with the crowd how his stu- dents have visited historic battlegrounds around the world — the French beaches of Normandy, the Nazi concentration and extermination camps of Auschwitz and Flanders Fields in Belgium. Albert said it is important for the cadets to understand what those who have gone before them went through in the name of democracy. Cushing Elementary School students were also in attendance. Some Cushing fourth-graders opened the salute to veter- ans by singing "Give Me America."
