By MATT MASTERSON Conley News Service WAUKESHA — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson said last week the World Health Organization has "failed" and the Centers for Disease Control has proven itself to be less reliable than he would like in han- dling Ebola cases at home and abroad. The Republican from Oshkosh was in town for a Waukesha Food Connection food distribution event at True Life Church, in partnership with the Pewaukee Chamber of Commerce. Johnson called for restrictions on trav- el from countries like Sierra Leone and Liberia and quarantines for people who have been in such countries to stop the deadly virus from spreading any further. "I think there are already 30 countries already that are restricting travel to accomplish that," he told The Post. "They have successfully kept Ebola from spread- ing into other countries in Africa. We did- n't do that, so we need to reassess those policies, reassess those protocols. We need to change them as rapidly as possible." He said such restrictions could be mediated through the use of passports and visas — if a person's documents showed he or she had recently been to West Africa, he or she would not be able to board a flight to the U.S. for at least three weeks. Johnson believes restrictions are nec- essary, but said he is not calling for an all- out travel ban from West Africa. He said supplies and medical workers should be able to reach that area to help those already affected. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker called for similar travel restrictions as part of his Ebola preparedness plans recently. The governor directed the state's health offi- cer to work with the head of the Wisconsin National Guard on protocols and procedures for treating people with the virus. He also said he was working with the Wisconsin Hospital Association to form a clinical advisory team to advise the state health department in the ongo- ing response to Ebola. "Here in Wisconsin, we take protecting the public from a potential health crisis very seriously," Walker said. "We are tak- ing these steps because, while we hope for the best, we must be prepared for the worst. Prevention is key to stopping the spread of any illness." Johnson said organizations such as the WHO and the CDC, as well as President Barack Obama, are "late to the party" and need to be forthright in delivering facts to the American public. "The World Health Organization has failed, the CDC is proving itself to be not as reliable, certainly, as we would like it to be," he said. "I don't know who they think they are dealing with here, but they are not being helpful at this point in time in terms of quelling people's concerns. They are increasing people's concerns." Johnson also expressed his support for Walker in next month's election. He said the gover nor has begun moving Wisconsin in the right direction and has earned a second term in office. A poll released from Marquette University last week showed Walker and Democratic candidate Mary Burke to be essentially in a dead heat with less than three weeks until the election. Johnson said Republicans should take notice of the close race, but added the most impor- tant poll has yet to come. "I think we all need to be concerned," he said. "This is going to be a close elec- tion, but let's face it, the only poll that counts is on Election Day." 2 • Milwaukee County Post • October 24, 2014 volume 20, issue number 43 The Milwaukee County Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414.744.6370 General FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: Daryl Skaradzinski: General Manager - ext. 13 dskaradzinski@conleynet.com For editorial inquires: Dwayne Butler: Editor - 262-513-2626 dbutler@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee County Post 3397 S.
