By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE — Hundreds of concerned Milwaukee-area residents spoke to the state Public Service Commission last week, raising concerns about We Energies' two-tiered rate increase that could result in higher residential user rates and changes in how solar-power- generating customers are compensated. The PSC on Oct. 8 held two public hearings at the Wilson Park Senior Center on Milwaukee's south side. According to PSC offi- cials, nearly 500 people spoke at both sessions. We Energies' latest rate proposal includes a request to raise rates overall by 1.8 percent, starting in January. Residential customers, however, could experience rate hikes of up to 5 percent if the plan moves forward. Business owners stand to have lower rate increases. Contributions toward the solar-power-gen- erating customers also are set to change and will likely result in lower levels of compensa- tion, moving forward, if We Energies' request is approved. Speakers criticized We Energies for a per- ceived inequitable proposal that could impact lower-income families. People also took to the microphone to take aim at the compensation changes for solar power generation. Advocates say the changes could curb green initiatives.
