WYNN WRITINGS The always-impeccable Carolina Herrera talks about the fab SMOOTH AS SILK Resort looks she brings to Wynn and how she puts the luxe in Las Vegas style. BY LAURIE BROOKINS C 120 WYNN arolina Herrera is that rare breed of designer who crafts exquisitely elegant clothes that also often boast an intellectual backstory. A passionate reader and collec- tor of books, the Venezuelan- born Herrera has been known to weave together such references as Victorian-era botanical prints with the traditional garb of Korean farmers, as she did for Spring/Summer 2011, the result being a series of billowing, artfully structured ball gowns that were nothing less than lust-worthy. Her devotion to the highest ideals of thoughtful design makes Herrera a perfect addition to Wynn's A-list retail roster; beginning with her Resort 2011 collection, you'll now find her always-femi- nine, always-forward looks at Outfit. With that in mind, and as we celebrate all things design in this issue, it also seems the perfect time to celebrate Herrera as well. WYNN: Your collection recently became available at Outfit at Wynn. Have you spent much time in Las Vegas, and if so, what are your impressions of the city? CH: I have only been here a few times, but I am always amazed by the city. Las Vegas is a fantasy land, different from any other place. It is fantastic, and I love the energy here. Why is Las Vegas the perfect city in which to find your clothes? The Resort collection embraces how a woman of today lives, from an easy Capri pant paired with a knit T-shirt to a spec- tacular evening gown with just the right amount of drama—all ideal for the ever-changing day and nightlife of Las Vegas. How would you define Las Vegas style? Las Vegas style is very diverse because of all of the differ- ent cultures coming together. You always see plenty of color, patterns and other elements of individual style. What's your absolute favorite memory of Las Vegas? I did a show once for the Philharmonic at Lake Las Vegas, which was so beautiful and completely different from any- thing on the Strip. The ladies were so serene and chic. I was able to see two very different sides of the Las Vegas lifestyle. What were the inspirations behind your Resort collection? I always start with a woman in mind, and this season more than ever. This collection embraces the mood that feels right for today—light in spirit and fab- rics, strong in color and never, ever too serious. Throughout all, you will find a touch of something special, a hint of grosgrain touches on almost all of the pieces in the collection, a little embroidery for sparkle—always something to make it unique, never simple. Which looks in particular from Resort are best suited for a night in Las Vegas? Only in Las Vegas could you wear my mul- ticolor abstract-floral-print cotton shift dress in midwinter. The weather is fantas- tic year-round. Las Vegas is well-known as a city of escape, but when you have the opportunity, where's your ultimate place of escape and why? My favorite city for a weekend getaway is Paris or Venice. Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. In any season, Paris is fantastic. I also love Venice; it's a mysterious and romantic city. Wynn also boasts the boutique of Manolo Blahnik, a good friend and colleague who produces exclusive shoes for you. Why is he the designer of choice for your collection? He is my absolute favorite shoe designer. His shoes magically trans- form a woman's leg. ■ Floral cotton sateen dress ($1,790) and black and silver lace strapless gown ($4,690), both by Carolina Herrera. Outfi t, 702-770-3465
