October 2014, TEHAMA - THE MAGAZINE 27 As varied as the shape of the hat are the materials used to make them. Katya Brickner is a hat specialist at Crossroads Feed and Ranch Supply and that woman knows hats. It seems our county prefers Resistol over Stetson, which are the two main manufacturers of cowboy hats. Most hats are made of felt, beaver, palm leaf or straw. Felt and beaver hats are described by the number of X's associated with the model. The higher the X, the higher the quality, generally speaking. Any felt or beaver hat can be designed to look and function the way the cowboy prefers. Using steam allows the hats to be shaped and there are multiple ways to shape a hat. From the crease to the brim, there are endless options for shape. From the brick top, the Montana Crease, Nevada Crease, Quarter Horse Crease, Texas Two-Finger Crease, the Plainsman and the Sisco Crease all the way to a rolled brim or a flat brim. Most palm and straw hats are not shaped because the steam shrinks or damages the materials. Brickman states that cowboy hats are essentially timeless and that very little has changed about them over the years. She equates the consistency to a deep and abiding love among cowboys for tradition. All in all, it is obvious that a cowboy's hat is an essential item to carry out his work and to use as part of his signature style. Both Root and Brickman said that on or off duty, you won't see a man too far away from his hat. 604 Main St., Red Bluff (530) 529-5154 www.redblufflosmariachis.com Parties - Reunions Rehearsal Dinners Corporate and Private Events Book your next event today! at Los Mariachis Mexican Restaurant Sacred Heart & Mercy High An Excellent Choice is in College Preparatory Education Established in 1882 A Safe & Nurturing Environment Strong Academics Small Class Sizes Dedicated Teachers Community Atmosphere Competitive Sports Programs Spiritual and Moral Development Now accepting enrollment Sacred Heart, Grades K-8 Mercy High 9-12 For more information, please call us at (530) 527-8313 233 Riverside Way, Red Bluff, CA
