Coach of the Issue/Tymberlyn Bealer Hailie Willey Staff Writter Juanita VanMeter Staff Writer Kaylie Capps Staff Writer Lexi Pritchard Topics Editor Red Bluff High School's Varsity football team is preparing and getting ready for the big shoot out with Corning high school tonight, which takes place at Red Bluff. After losing two games already this season, the team has been practicing very hard and they have trained over the summer to get to know each other better. "I love my teammates. They are like brothers to me," senior Walker Dodero said. The players feel confident that they will win even after losing a few players this year. "I am confident that our juniors will step up to the challenge and we will win," junior Kole Beal said. "The game will have its ups and downs, but it's always challenging," said Carlos Rivera, Junior. The teams, especially the seniors, are excited for the game against Corning. "We are excited because this will be our last shoot out against Corning," Dodero also said. Although, they do feel like a few With their season already so far a success with an overall record of 2-1 as of the time this issue has been written, the freshmen boys football team remains optimistic and continues to work their hardest at not just their games but practices. To improve every practice they do a lot of conditioning and running through offensive, as well as defensive plays. "We do a lot of conditioning so when the fourth quarter comes we are still able to go full speed," said Wyatt Richison, freshman. They also continue to work on pinpointing the few things that need to be adjusted, as well as locking in the many things that they succeed in. Some of the things they feel as if they need to improve on is the team's endurance, their defense covering passes, and sustaining blocks. "We run." This was the statement given me by Karl Parks on what exactly cross country was like. Karl did open up a bit and explain how a week in cross country can go, and it actually seems more complicated then that. "Mondays we have speed workouts on the track," Karl said, "An Tuesdays is recovery and core. Then on Wednesdays we have a meet." I asked him to elaborate and he explained that, "Normally it's a dual race with boys and girls, JV about 2.25- 2.5 miles and Varsity runs 3 miles. At invitational, boys and girls run separate as JV and Varsity." After meets, Karl said, "Thursdays are more core training and recovery from the meet, and then there's Fridays, which are fun days. We take a long run at 'talking pace', so we can chat with each other. We run all over town, take routs we wouldn't have taken when driving, routs you've never taken before, and it ends up being a lot of fun." Despite last week's loss, the varsity football team is geared up and ready for the game against Corning things can be improved. "We just have to stick to our jobs and stick to the game plan," Kole Beal said. "We need to execute better because execution is key," says senior Joey Skaggs, "But we have a good coach who helps us. He is a good motivator and he knows what he is talking about." The game tonight is at 7:30. The next varsity game is against Foothill and takes place at Red Bluff High School. The members of the Red Bluff High Cheer leading team are excited for the new season, and what it will bring. Karlie Lopez, a junior, back or in stunt group says, "The seasons going alright, it's been hard ever since the senior's left." Laynee Dennis, freshman base or back, "I'm enjoying my first year of cheering, it's a new experience." Lopez is most excited for "Holiday Classic, its fun and the football players get to come and help with the stunts, so they are better." Hanna Huhn, freshman spotter, believes her greatest accomplishment as a cheerleader is "landing the stunts." Huhn and Dennis are both freshmen's this year; also this is both their first year of cheering ever. Dennis is excited about, "How it's new and I can't wait to see what it's like!" Huhn said, "I don't really know that much about it but I really enjoy the rallies!" Before haft time, during the games Dennis says "I get pretty nervous, but it's so much fun once you get out there, I love to perform sometimes I do think I'm going to forget my moves, but I've done it so many times I just doubt myself." Huhn said, "I've been performing ever since I was 6 so I don't get nervous." "I've improved since ninth grade in everything including dancing," stated Lopez. Red Bluf f Hig h School's Cheerleaders have been work ing ha rd t his season Cross country intensely works out The things that they feel as if they view as strengths would be their passing and defense. According to team members the team has many experienced as well as beginning football players. The previous game that this team played against was Anderson High School, and ended with a final score of 20-8. Although they brought home a win the team members, as well as the coaches felt as though they could have done immensely better. "We could have done a lot better; We made a lot of mistakes that we shouldn't have made and there are a lot of things we need to work on," said Ian Hagen Freshman. "I feel that we did not live up to our potential, we had some really good moments, but overall it should not have been that close of a game," said Coach Minto.
