By Pat Neumuth Freeman Staff WAUKESHA — As a coach, the job is to always motivate players. Arrowhead High School girls tennis coach Gina Resch has the ultimate motivation for the Classic 8 Conference season. "Our goal is to go 49-0, and I think we lost one match last year, so we are trying to go 49-0 before the conference tour nament," Resch said. "That's really what they want and we have a very seasoned team. They know what to expect when they come into a match and they set a goal for themselves for each set and stick with it." Arrowhead's 7-0 sweep over Waukesha West earli- er this month was the third straight Classic 8 shutout for the Warhawks. "We just have a lot of fun out there," said senior Abbey Lauterbach, who is half of the Warhawks' No. 3 doubles team. "It's been great having Maddie (Sorenson) as a partner. She keeps me smiling. (Going undefeated in con- ference) isn't a daunting task. We just go out there every day and do our thing and play our game." Arrowhead's singles players didn't show any signs of worry. Of the four singles matches, only senior No. 1 singles player Emily Kolbow dropped a game. "That's pretty standard for them," Resch said of the singles players only losing one game combined. "They play to their highest level at every match." Resch said senior No. 3 singles player Rachel Ross and sophomore No. 4 sin- gles player Paige Schultz could be a No. 1 player at another school. Ross has been the No. 3 player for the past three years. Resch said each of the girls knows her role in each flight, and it doesn't bother them who is ahead or behind them in the order. "I have what you call a per- fect No. 3 and No. 4," Resch said. "They are a person who will hang in a point for how long it takes, but they definitely know how to be aggressive when need be. They all know their place counts, and all they can think about it team state, team state, team state." Of all the success of Arrowhead has in a wide range of athletic programs, girls tennis is one of the few programs that has never competed in a team state tournament. Homestead has taken the sectional champi- onship the past six years, but the Warhawks feel it's their year to go to team state. Arrowhead beat Homestead 6-1 in a dual earlier this sea- son. "That's our goal: To be the first team ever to make state," Sorenson said. "(Being No. 3 doubles), I don't think there's more or less pressure to win. The coaches have told us that we are hoped to be counted as a win because every match counts. Obviously, the No. 1s and No. 2s will have tough matches, so we always need to play our game." Added Lauterbach, "It would be incredible to go to state, especially since this is my senior year. It's a great team, probably the strongest team we have and will have for a while. We are all very, very close, and I think that plays into the strength of our team." West's doubles teams pushed Arrowhead the most. Lauterbach and Sorenson beat Katie Schoe- maker and Jenny Wildes 6-0, 6-3. Arrowhead's No. 2 dou- bles team of senior Court- ney Shipshock and junior Tara Tanriverdi won 6-2, 6-1. Arrowhead juniors Kali Flesch and Sara Geschke had the longest match on the courts winning 6-4, 6-1 over West junior Lynnie Lind- blom and senior Ashley Sol- berg at No. 1 doubles. Resch was happy to see Flesch and Geschke get pushed in their match. "Every match counts and they all need to work on some things as a team," Resch said. The Muskies were 31-9 and won many more champi- onships this year. Pewaukee won the LOL Western Divi- sion championship, the Tri- County Night League cham- pionship and went to the final four in the Wisconsin Amateur Baseball Classic. No statistics were avail- able for the final Grand Championship game. PEWAUKEE 10, CEDARBURG 4: Pewau- kee defeated Cedarburg to get to the Grand Champi- onship final. The game was tied 1-1 through five innings, until the Muskies scored five runs in the bot- tom of the sixth and three in the seventh. Nick Wischer went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tom Zimmer- man went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brock Guetzke got the win on the mound pitching 7 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits, three walks and five strikeouts. PEWAUKEE 4, NEW BERLIN 3: Pewaukee opened the Grand Champi- onships behind the pitching of Brock Guetzke, who scat- tered seven hits with 11 strikeouts and five walks in going the distance. With the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning and two outs, Guetzke worked through the tense situation by responding with a pressure-packed, game-ending strikeout. "It was an exhilarating feeling to get the final strikeout," said Guetzke, a 2008 graduate of Hartford High School in his second year with the Muskies. "On the last pitch, I just tried to throw it as hard as possi- ble, make the most of the situation and leave it all on the field. At that point, it was just a matter of having faith in my ability, pitching with confidence and work- ing through the pressure." Guetzke was a stabilizing force through the opening six innings, allowing only an infield single in the top of the third. "It was a great playoff atmosphere and both teams played a hell of a game from beginning to end," said Guetzke, who pinpointed his curveball and fastball as being big factors in his success. "Looking back, it was just awesome to finally get the job done and walk off the field with a victory. Being the first round of the play- offs, it felt good to get this one under our belt. Hope- fully, we can keep it going." Pewaukee scored three runs on four hits in the bot- tom of the first, sparked on a two-out RBI double by catcher Tom Zimmer man and a two-run, two-out dou- ble by second baseman John Sarcia. "With runners on second and third, I was just look- ing for a good pitch to drive," said Sarcia, a 2003 g raduate of Pewaukee High School in his 14th season with the team. "It was a fastball, so I just tried to take a hard swing and bar rel the ball into the gap." Designated hitter Rob Brockel drove in what later became the winning run on a two-out sacrifice fly in the sixth. BURLINGTON 4, PEWAUKEE 1: Arrow- head High School alum Brian Henschel threw a complete game to lead the Southwest Division cham- pions past Pewaukee. Henschel also hit a two- run doubles for the Barons. — Freeman Staff Muskies win Grand Championship PREP GIRLS TENNIS: Arrowhead 7,Waukesha West 0 Warhawks trying for perfect conference season Arrowhead motivated by Classic 8 potential Pat Neumuth/Freeman Staff Arrowhead No. 1 doubles player Sara Geschke, right, hits the ball at the net while partner Kali Flesch watches from the baseline against Waukesha West.
