Well, the first steps in this particular journey were taken 151 years ago in Gettysburg, Pa., and the last Wednesday in Wash- ington D.C. Delafield native Alonzo Cushing died heroically during the American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. President Barack Obama has approved a posthumous Medal of Honor for Cushing, to be awarded in a White House cere- mony. It's been a long time coming, especially for residents of Delafield — home of Cushing Memorial Park and Cush- ing Elementary School — some of whom have been pursuing the medal on Cushing's behalf for a decade, if not longer. One such resident is local historian David Krueger. "This is so exciting," said Krueger. "This is phenomenal news," added Delafield Mayor Michele DeYoe. "I'm almost speechless, and that's pretty rare for me." A hero's story Twenty-two-year-old Cushing, a West Point graduate and first lieu- tenant, led a Union artillery battery during a determined Confederate assault — the famous Pickett's Charge — on the Gettysburg battle's pivotal third day. The 12,500 attacking rebels sustained enormous casual- ties, yet nearly broke through the Union lines at Cemetery Ridge.
