Durfee has been coaching cheer for 15 years all together now. However, she has only been coaching here at Red Bluff High School for her 12th year this year. Before Red Bluff she coached cheer leading at Corning High School. When asked what about coaching does she like the best, her response was, "I love seeing my athletes grow over their 4 year stay at Red Bluff High School. Coach of the Issue/Tymberlyn Bealer Ceighlee Fennel Features Editor Lexi Pritchard Topics Editor Cross-country gains athletes If you see any cross country runners trekking it around Red Bluff, don't be afraid to slow down and stop! They just started their season and the coaches would appreciate everyone keeping an eye out for them. This year has around the normal amount of runners participating in cross country, but many are new people. There was a huge increase in new participants this year. Mr. Hendricks said, "I am super excited this year because what the team lacks in experience, they make up for it in enthusiasm." A new member, Jordan Vazquez a senior, said, "It's already a lot of fun." Nicole Renfroe, a returning player and also a junior, followed up with, "Conditioning is killer, but it has had its funny moments already." This team actually started before school with summer training. It was optional, however, and around 12 people would show up. Now they practice every school day. During the year, they have a couple different events planned. Cross Country doesn't do any fund raising, but they still get to do different things such as traveling. Their main trip is one where they go running on Clam Beach. Also, they go camping as well. When asked what the coaches expectations were this year, Hendricks said, "My only expectation is ending the season with everyone healthy and having the members want running to play a role in their future." Tennis team is finishing up final decisions for who will make the last cuts for their new season Varsity volleyball team switches up Football secures panache As the Red Bluff girls tennis team makes final cuts and decides their final ladder for this year's team, the girls trying out all remain hopeful for the outcome of the final cuts. Once there is an established ladder their first practice match is against Corning high school. With the beginning of a new season the girls team will be up against even harder competitors than the years before. Due to the fact that the season has just started the girls tennis team for the past week has been having tryouts in order to establish the ranking among the team. In order to see where they stand the players play each other in different matches that are called round robin matches. This is when each player of the team plays each other in a match and once everyone has played each other the total amount of wins rank each player from worst to best. Once the final ladder is established the top six players on the team will play their first tennis match of the season against Corning High school which is where they will also be competing. With the start of this years season up ahead the amount of teams the girls will be playing against changes. The total amount has changed due to the fact that three more teams have been added to their league. When final cuts are made and the ladder has been established all of the girls have high hopes for a successful 2013-2014 season. Cleo Dufrain, freshman, is practicing and trying to make the last cuts for the tennis team at the Red Bluff High School tennis courts. Christina Zumalt, junior, is practicing spiking the ball during a Varsity team practice. are from 3:30 to 5:30. At first Frantz tried getting all the girls into weight training for the extra conditioning, but whether it was schedules or timing, that plan didn't work out which is why he is putting it into the practices. Another significant change this year is a new tournament for the Varsity team. They will be heading to Reno to play 30 different teams from all over the state. Some of the teams will also be from Nevada and Oregon. This tournament is taking place on Labor Day weekend. Although their season hasn't officially started the Red Bluff boys varsity football team is in high spirits for their upcoming games this season. They have been working hard to work out their flaws, as well as make their strengths even stronger. Due to their hard work they feel as if they have been well prepared for the season to come. The next game this Varsity team will be playing is on August 29 against Central Valley at Central Valley. This upcoming game is considered a zero game. Which is a game that is played a week before scheduled but still counts as a league game. The varsity team believes that they are well matched against Central Valley and hope to bring home a win. "We should do really good against them because we have good athletes who match up well against them," said Kade Lewis Senior As the days get shorter to their first game of the season the Varsity team is in high hopes to play their hardest and bring home Red Bluff High school their first win of the season. As this year starts to kick off, so does Varsity volleyball. However, the team has gone through a couple changes. Josh Frantz is acting as the head coach this year instead of Kim Wheeler. "I am some super big shoes to fill because she is a legendary coach and teacher, but I am going to do my best to take over where Kim left off," said Coach Frantz. He has coached JV volleyball for a year at RBHS and now he is moving up to Varsity. During preseason Frantz is mainly focused on finding what formation, player positions, and plays works best for this new team. "The team isn't super tall so we are going to run some interesting sets in order to misdirect and fake out the other team, aka. RAZZLE-DAZZLE," said Frantz. Coach Frantz's other main focus is to "emphasize having a tight-knit group and having each other's back." When asking one of the players, Christina Zumalt, a junior, what they are looking forward to most this year, she said, "Team bonding and winning. I think we will have a strong team this year." Also, he is implementing some extra conditioning into practices.
