Elijahtron is the newest and toughest Trans- former. Brookfield Central High School senior Elijah Good- man isn't really a robot in disguise. But he did trans- form his body from a 280- pound athlete struggling to stay on the playing surface because he was out of shape to a Division 1 recruit on the baseball dia- mond. "My sopho- more year, I lost 60 pounds. Now I think I'm at a perfect weight at 225 pounds," Goodman said. "My sophomore basketball season, I would get in the game and I could only go a minute to two minutes and I'd be dead tired. That was just ridiculous." Most people would say it would be hard to lose 60 pounds, but Goodman said it was easy. He didn't change how much he ate, but Good- man ate smarter. And he said there's not a specific healthy food that he eats to help him lose weight. He doesn't eat fast food. If he has to, he sticks to places like Subway and opts for healthy options. Recently retired Central basketball coach Mark Adams said any time the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams traveled on the same bus, the teams would stop at Kopp's Frozen Custard in Brookfield following road games. He said Goodman was the only player who would not order anything. "When we had him up as a sophomore, he had post skills but he had a real diffi- cult time getting up and down the floor because he was carrying so much weight with him," Adams said. "It's nothing I said. He took it upon himself. I think he saw the impact it was having. I think he saw the capabilities we had as a team, but he also wanted to become a better athlete for baseball.'" Adams said Goodman could have played the entire game if needed to this past winter. Goodman finds it hard to decide which is his favorite between basketball or base- ball. His future is in base- ball, though. He is the Lancers' ace pitcher in a stacked rotation, and he's also the No. 3 hitter in the batting order. Goodman entered this sea- son knowing every time he was on the mound, it was as if he was interviewing for college recruiters. "I just try not to think about it," Goodman said. "My mechanics have gotten better. Last year I would kind of just throw it, where this year I'm pitching it. I'm hitting my spots." His weight transformation has also helped him on the mound. Losing the fat didn't help him gain velocity, but all the hours he has spent in the weight room has improved his pitch speed. Coach Jeff Bigler said Goodman's veloc- ity is between 86 and 91 miles per hour, up about four mph from last year. "He's around the plate and goes after hitters," Bigler said. "He's right around the plate and works in a pretty hard slider that's helped him out. He's also really worked on his changeup. When you have to contend against three pitches that he can throw for strikes and for that hard, it makes it tough on hitters for sure." Goodman's weight loss also has been noticeable at first base, and his range has expanded while fielding the position. Bigler said Good- man has also become a better baserunner. And he still has some pop. "He's hitting around .500 again, and he's hit an opposite field home run again this year," Bigler said. "When you talk about a high school hitter with opposite field home run power, that comes around once every 10 years."
