AUGUST CALENDAR BROOKFIELD — The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts has received two grants recently — one will help con- tinue an ongoing competition, while the other boosts efforts to establish a new community area. The Wilson Center Guitar Competi- tion and Festival received a $22,300 joint effort marketing grant from the state Department of Tourism. The grant is meant to promote the guitar competi- tion and invite music lovers to enjoy the competition and featured perfor- mances. This year's festival is scheduled for Aug. 14 to Aug. 16 and offers guitar com- petitions in rock/blues, fingerstyle, jazz and classical. Each category is judged by musicians famous in their genre. The center announced it had also received a $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts Our Town grant to estab- lish ArtsPark, a free, interactive sculp- ture garden, located in Brookfield's Mitchell Park. ArtsPark will feature non-traditional sculptures and will offer expanded edu- cational activities, including docent-led tours, field trip opportunities, and artist talks. ArtsPark planning is underway with an upcoming announcement about a sculpture competition. Full competi- tion details will be available at the 2014 Hidden River Art Festival. — Freeman Staff Submitted photo Department of Tourism Regional Tourism Specialist David Spiegelberg presented the Wilson Center Guitar Competition and Festival organizers with a tourism marketing grant to expand promotional efforts for the event.
