ENJOY Shopping & Dining in Downtown Waukesha 239048001 By Mark Hutchinson Freeman Staff MADISON — A dynasty ended last month. Perhaps another one has begun. The Brookfield East High School boys tennis team ended Marquette's seven- year reign as champion of the WIAA Division 1 state team tournament with a 4-3 semifinal victory over the Hilltoppers at Nielsen Ten- nis Stadium. And the Spartans used their streak-snapping victory as a springboard to a 6-1 tri- umph over Eau Claire Memo- rial in the championship later in the day. The state title is East's first since the WIAA implemented its team tournament format in 1995. But the Spartans cele- brated the continuation of a rich tradition by rolling out the state championship ban- ner the program earned in 1981, when it won its third consecutive state title under the previous tournament setup. East finished 20-0. "We thought last year we could nip Marquette, and we came up short," said East coach Linda Lied, whose Spartans fell 5-2 to the Hill- toppers in a 2013 state semifi- nal. "We made it a goal for our program right off the bat this season to do a clean sweep: win the conference dual and tournament cham- pionships, the sectional championship and then the team state championship. "So, this is great." East had defeated Mar- quette 5-2, 4-3 and 6-1 during the regular season, but the Hilltoppers did not relin- quish their spot atop the state without a battle Saturday. "They gave us a run for our money," Lied said. "That 4-3 was really a tough match. They came to play. We told the kids they would know how to win out here, so we expected a good match." The Spartans needed a singles sweep to get the job done, and they delivered. East senior Felix Corwin, who won his second straight state individual singles title the previous weekend, scored a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Mar- quette junior Alex Rokosz at No. 1 singles. "It was tough because we got swept in doubles — in close matches," Corwin said. "But our singles all played well, and we got through it. We definitely had our hands full with Marquette." East sophomore No. 2 sin- gles player David Horneffer, coming off a state runner-up performance the previous weekend, downed Marquette junior David Sinense 6-0, 6-1. Horneffer said the Spar- tans' success in the state individual tournament was a benefit in their return to Madison. "It really helped me, and I think it helped all of my teammates as well," Hornef- fer said. "Since all four of our singles players made the podium, we got a lot of match experience here. "Going in knowing we were down 0-3 to Marquette (after doubles play), I think it helped us cope with it. Marquette really came to play. I was happy we (the singles players) came out and played well." Sophomore No. 3 singles player Doug Francken earned the Spartans a piv- otal 6-1, 6-2 victory over Marquette freshman John Massart, and freshman teammate Robert Krill com- pleted East's singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of freshman Caleb Schifano. "It was nice to see our sin- gles adjust and stay true to the course," Lied said. "Felix has been the rock all year. David has gotten better every day, and Robert came through very quickly in his match against Marquette. "Our concern going after a singles sweep was Doug Francken's injury. His back and shoulder were hurting him. Massart is really a tal- ented player who keeps the ball in play very well, and I think they were looking to get that one. I stayed close to that match and tried to do whatever I could to lift Doug's confidence. "Doug had a great win. Everybody was thinking that was going to be a tighter match, but he did a fantastic job." The Spartans had plenty left in the tank for the cham- pionship match against Eau Claire Memorial after achiev- ing their milestone victory over Marquette. They recorded another singles sweep, getting victo- ries of 6-2, 6-0 from Corwin; 6-2, 6-0 from Horneffer; 6-2, 6-2 from Francken and 6-0, 6- 1 from Robert Krill. Engelhart and Langlois prevailed 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 dou- bles, and Kendler and Allen- stein earned the Spartans a 6- 3, 6-1 triumph at No. 3. "Going up against Eau Claire Memorial, we really hoped our doubles would win, and two out of the three did," Lied said. "They really showed perseverance after a disheartening loss to Marquette." The Brookfield East High School boys tennis coach admitted as much after her Spartans — favorites and underdogs alike — crowded the podium following the WIAA Division 1 state indi- vidual tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. East senior Felix Corwin captured his second consec- utive state singles champi- onship. The top-seeded Cor- win's 6-3, 6-3 finals victory came over sophomore team- mate David Horneffer, who came into the tourney seed- ed third but toppled second- seeded Middleton freshman Jake Van Emburgh 6-4, 3-6, 6- 4 in the semifinals. East junior Henry Ter- muehlen and sophomore Patrick Krill arrived in Madi- son seeded fourth in doubles, but knocked off first-seeded Homestead seniors Will Kam- merait and Aaron Rempel 7- 6(6), 7-5 in the semis before outlasting third-seeded Ger- mantown senior Ben Wait and junior Eric Stodola 6-3, 4-6, 7- 6(2) in the title match. Joining their teammates on the medal stand were East sophomore Doug Francken and freshman Robert Krill, who placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in singles. Krill, who upset fourth-seeded Green Bay Southwest senior Nick Allen after sustaining his only loss of the season to Horneffer in the quarterfinals, was up 6-3, 2-0 in the fifth-place match before Francken retired due to injury. "We got incredible work from all of our kids," Lied said. "All year, they've worked hard and pushed each other, and they were all were up there cheering for each other. It was a cool thing. "Everybody's game improved. That showed in this tournament. You can have talented players who don't get pushed every day and ultimately underachieve. But these guys really pushed each other and became better players for it." Corwin enjoyed climbing the stairs with his team- mates during the medals presentation. "It was awesome," he said. "David (Horneffer) earned his way into the title match. And our No. 1 doubles team won a state title, too. It was fun hav- ing so many teammates here in the biggest matches and coming out on top." Corwin, who beat 2013 Marquette High School graduate Damon Niquet in last year's state singles final, addressed his contrasting title sequel. "It was much different hav- ing to play my teammate in the finals," Corwin said. "I thought we were both pretty nervous, but we both handled our nerves pretty well." Lied was proud of her sin- gles champion and runner-up. "'Fe' winning two times in a row is really impressive, especially considering he didn't drop a set either time," the coach said. "David's semifinal win was a huge win for him." Termuehlen and Patrick Krill displayed confidence and grit in a grueling quarter- final triumph and in their two victories on the final day. "As long as we stay posi- tive, we play well," Ter- muehlen said. "I was tired after our second set (in the finals), but I fought through it. Winning it was such a great feeling." Patrick Krill echoed his partner's sentiments. "(The quarterfinal) match was a total grind," he said. "Our finals match was just as tough. Henry and I pulled through some major shots and fought for champi- onship points. This was an amazing accomplishment for us and by our team."
