The first thing on your to-do list: Pick up wicking apparel, which is gear that's specifically designed to remove moisture from the skin as the body produces sweat, said Jessica Hoepner, co-owner of Performance Running Outfitters, 2205 N. Calhoun Road, Brookfield. Wearing wicking apparel like socks and a headband, visor or hat will help keep skin cool- er and dryer when working out in the heat, she said. "A lot of the nicer athletic apparel also protects against harmful sun rays. Choose apparel that is lightweight with good ventilating properties," Hoepner said. Good ventilation properties to look for include mesh and laser-cut vent holes, she added. Avoid cotton, which has no cooling effects or protective properties for your skin. When stocking up on socks, make sure to invest in a good pair, said Kassey Hoffmann, an employee at Fleet Feet Sports, 17550 B-1 W. Blue- mound Road, Brookfield. "You need good socks to prevent blistering," Hoffmann said. "We also recommend a product called Body Glide or Sports Shield, which help with chafing issues that may occur during summer training." The right approach Picking up new summer attire should be an annual ritual, Hoff- mann said. Workout attire is typically only good for 20 to 30 washes, so it's impor- tant to pick up a few new pieces each summer, Hoffmann said.
