The Mosquito Fest opens on Friday evening with opening ceremonie,s and BBQ and fried chicken dinners. There will be live country music on Friday. The Southern Indiana Wiffleball Cham- pionships begin on Friday as well. It is a double elimination tourney that will run all day Saturday as well. Zoar is located on Indiana 64 about three miles east of Stendal on the Pike- Dubois county line. The grounds will open at 5 p.m. EDT and will feature standard Mosquito Fest food, includ- ing elephant toes and homemade ice cream. A full-day of activities is set for Satur- day, highlighted by the famous Station- ary Parade at 1 p.m. EDT, which has been featured in national magazines. All the units line up, with fire trucks and sirens blaring like a typical parade, but instead of the parade passing down the street, the parade stays in one spot and the spectators walk around the parade. Saturday starts early with breakfast beginning at 6:30 a.m. EDT. Pancakes and sausage, or biscuits and gravy will be available. It is just the beginning of old fashioned fun. Following the Stationary Parade, they will have sack races, three-legged races, balloon toss and egg toss com- petitions open to anyone and everyone. An iron skillet toss, open only to women is on tap as well. This will take place on Saturday, following the kids' games that start at 2 p.m. EDT. Other activities taking place over both days include a flea market, craft demonstrations and a Country Store in the old school house. A flea market and Coke pitch will also run both days. The quilt show, produce show and flower show will take entries from 10 a.m. to noon EDT in the church basement, judging will follow the noon deadline. A skinny legged contest and a hula hoop contest are set for 5 p.m. EDT. A Gospel Sing will top off the evening at 7 p.m. EDT featuring The Bridges of Evansville and The Montgomerys. Indiana is a part of the "Corn Belt," the area of the United States best known for its corn production. Accord- ing to the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, almost half of all the crops grown in the state are corn. Because of its high level of corn pro- duction, Indiana is also home to several festivals celebrating the sweet corn grown in the state. Each summer, the Oakland City Sweet Corn Festival pays homage to the home-grown product. This year, the festival is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 5, through Friday, Aug. 8, at Wirth Park in Oakland City. The event is sponsored by the Oak- land City Lions Club. A large parade, games, flea market, carnival rides, crafts, beauty pageant, live entertainment, fried chicken and pork chop dinners and, of course, corn on the cob, make up this family-friendly festival. Admission is free. august 2014 ■ EVENT CALENDAR CONTINuED ON PAGE 22 CONTINuED FROM PAGE 14
