May 2014, TEHAMA - THE MAGAZINE 29 For many, the Sacramento River Discovery Center has become an ideal way to get in a little exercise either before or after work. The trail system is paved, flat and ADA accessible, making it ideal for walking, running, roller blading or cycling. Mt. Shasta, Lassen Peak and the Yolla Bolly mountains can all be viewed along the trails. Benches are strategically placed for resting or simply stopping to take in the view. Part of that view may be a bird in flight or resting on a tree limb. If you're interested in learning to identify the various species, pick up a guide to bird watching in the Red Bluff Recreation Area at the Discovery Center's visitor's center. It identifies 105 species commonly found in the watershed. Free guided bird walks led by Dr. David Dahnke are typically scheduled on the first Saturday morning of the month. Forty sites along the trail system are marked and identified in an interpretive guide also available at the visitor's center. This handy brochure will help you find an osprey's nest and identify the various trees. It will encourage you to look up into a grove of oak trees to find the large dome-shaped masses of sticks collected by yellow-billed magpies to call home. It also lets you know where benches and water fountains can be found along the way. If your interest in the watershed is piqued while out on the trails, make sure to stop by the visitor's center to experience the interpretive displays that provide a more detailed understanding of the river system and natural resources. Children may delight in the terrariums holding a few native snake breeds. Ample maps and area resources are available to make sure you get the most from your visit to the Mendocino National Forest. For those ready to get out on the water, a boat ramp allows access to the Sacramento River for a nominal fee. The area is popular with anglers and kayakers as well as those wanting the thrill of a jet ski. The Sacramento River Discovery Center is open year-round, and hosts special activities throughout, including a watershed festival – May 17 in 2014 – and an annual native plant sale. Check the website or stop by the visitor's center for a complete list of events.
