The act amends as well as revises the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act, also known as the Equal Pay Act. The Act prohibits against "wage differen- tiation" based upon gender. The act would have also prevented "employer retaliation for employee complaints." Employers who violate the gender dis- crimination guidelines would be liable for either financial or punitive punish- ment. T he act covers other various tech- nical aspects, for further specific information, refer to congress.gov. A large goal of the bill was to make it illegal for an employee to be pun- ished for revealing what they are paid; this is in response to allegations that women still make 77cents to the dol- lar of men, despite having the same qualifications. This claim however, has been called into question by some. According to the Washington Post, the bill was unable to persuade any Re- publicans to vote in support of it.
