This was the resounding message during a special ceremonial event Sunday as the 10- year anniversary of Witmer's death approached. Local dignitaries, military per- sonnel and loved ones gathered outside the Richards Street Armory to pay tribute to Witmer, an Army specialist who died April 9, 2004, while in combat in Iraq. During an exceptionally beautiful spring day, emotions among some of the gatherers ran high as memories of a woman seeming- ly gone all too soon bubbled back to the sur- face. Attendees included many of the mem- bers in the National Guard's 32nd Military Police. Witmer served with the company while stationed in Iraq. Witmer's parents, John and Lori Witmer, spoke briefly and shared the significance their daughter played in many people's lives. John Witmer readily recognized the thousands of other military casualties and injuries that have ensued in the past decade. But he said Witmer's death marked a "para- digm shift" for women and their role in the military. During Witmer's service, the role of mil- itary women in the front lines was still in question.
