HOMES PLUS APRIL 2014 2 237731003 strength," said Erik Dieringer, owner of Big Fish Contracting in Hartland. "Cedar shingles aren't used as much as they used to be. They give a nice architectural look, but they come at a premium price." Cedar shingles also have to be installed correctly to make them last. "If they are installed correctly, they can last a long time with little mainte- nance," Dieringer said. "They need venti- lation, or they will rot from the moisture in between them." There are other options, as well, said Randy Miller, owner of Allrite Home & Remodeling Inc in Milwaukee. "Homeowners can choose from several materials when replacing a roof, includ- ing composite, wood, fiberglass, rubber and steel shingles," he said in a news release issued by the Miwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council. "If the house is located in an open or windy location, I would recommend a heavier shingle that is nailed down to withstand high winds. "If a house is located in an area that is shaded and often damp, I would recom- mend an algae-resistant shingle that con- tains 10 percent copper, which can eat away at the algae." One of the latest trends is the use of dimensional or architectural shingles, as opposed to the standard three-tab shin- gles. Dimensional shingles are created by fusing two shingles together that results in a unique 3-dimensional appearance. "It gives an appearance of shadowing on the surface and gives an architectural pop to it," Dieringer said. "These also come with longer warranties on them." They are slightly more expensive than the tradi- tional asphalt shingles. continued from Page 1 Distributed by: ©2011 by Conley Media Waukesha County Homes Plus is published monthly by Conley Media - Waukesha County, 801 N.
