By Lisa Curtis Conley News Service CEDARBURG — Want to hear some of the best local musical talent around? Head to the Cedarburg Cultural Center. Interested in seeing the Plein Air paintings drawn from Cedarburg landscapes the week before the Strawberry Festival? The Cultural Center has that, too. The all-purpose cultural hub of Ozaukee County is a his- torical venue, education center, museum and stage both for performing and visual arts. It was born of a love of art and history in 1985 by Rita and Carl Edquist of Cedarburg, and kept thriving by a community that understood its significance. In the book "Celebrating a Quarter Century" that Paul Hayes wrote about the center in 2010. "Rita had the idea, which sprang from her love of art and respect for history. Carl oversaw the transition of the idea to reality through his leadership and with financial support," Hayes said. "After Rita's death in 2001, Carl organized a retrospective show of her paint- ings at the Cultural Center. Carl died on July 9, 2010, a little more than a month after the Center observed its 25th anniversary as a vibrant, healthy and regionally important center of history, education, and the visual and performing arts." As a historical forum, the CCC plays hosts to fireside chats about the region's his- tory, is a favorite field trip destination for school children and acts as a repository for thousands of the 19th and 20th century pho- tos. It is the center that operates the 1849 Kuhefuss House Museum and the Cedarburg General Store Museum, and hosts the Architectural Treasures Tours. As a museum, the center offers a number of galleries, including the Main Street Gallery, which features the work of Cedarburg Artist Guild members. A performing arts venue, the CCC has provided much more access to local musi- cians through its Blueburg Cafe open mic night, which is attended by hundreds of peo- ple on the first Wednesday evening of each month. The center is located at W62 N546 Washington Ave. For more information, go to www.cedarburgcultural center.org or call 375-3676. The next major event will be April 12, when McMann and Tate productions returns with its Tomato Dodgeball Adult Improv Comedy. 14 • Exploring the Arts • N e w s G r a p h i c & D a i l y N e w s • M a r c h 2 0 1 4 220 Info Hwy.
