By Alison Wood Conley News Service HARTFORD — Diversity is the name of the game at the Schauer Arts and Activities Center. Where else in Washington County can audiences see per- formances by Step Afrika!, pianist Alpin Hong, Genesis guitarist Darryl Stuermer and the famed Second City comedy troupe. And those are just a few of the offerings for the months of March and April. "We are trying to offer some- thing for everyone," Director of Marketing Robyn Wilkinson said. "We've been exploring 'Try it' ... if it's not your cup of tea, try some- thing else." In addition to hosting those per- forming arts performances, the Schauer Center boasts the Suckow Family Art Gallery to display art- work — mostly from Wisconsin- based artists' groups — and host receptions for other center events. In addition to hosting notable national and international enter- tainers at the 571-seat Ruth A. Knoll Theater, the Schauer Center also works to keep it local as a per- formance venue for The Hartford Players, the Hartford Community Chorus and the Hartford City Band, as well for several local school's productions and concerts. In another effort to keep things local — and to engage the kids — the Community School for the Arts offers dance, music and visu- al arts classes for both families, children and adults. CSA also offers theater work- shops with visiting artists and opportunities to audition for shows with Missoula Children's Theatre. "It's about the education," Wilkinson said. "We like to find artists willing to work with our students." Wilkinson said about 1,000 stu- dents participate in the center's programs. She also said the relatively new, monthly Wine and Painting class consistently fills all 24 available spots. The Schauer Center opened in February 2001 in what used to be a canning factory. In addition to the theater and art gallery, the center have two meeting rooms, a cater- ing prep kitchen, rehearsal hall, dance studio and banquet room.
