April 4, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 5 Milwaukee County one of state's least healthiest MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County ranks among the least healthiest counties in the state, according to the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's annual County Health Ranks, released last week. The rankings take into account 29 differ- ent health factors, including smoking, high school graduation rates, employment, phys- ical inactivity and access to healthy foods. Out of 72 counties, Milwaukee County found itself in the bottom quarter for health outcomes (71) and health factors (71). The county ranks in the bottom quarter of Wisconsin counties for health behaviors (70), clinical care (54), social and economic factors (71), and physical environment (64). Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan K. Baker emphasized the dominant role that social and economic factors have in deter- mining the health of a person, a city, or a nation. "The chronic stress of living in poverty doesn't just reduce people's ability to engage in healthy behaviors," Baker said in a statement. "It also directly affects people's health through chronic increases in stress hormones in the body which make women more likely to deliver premature babies and lead directly to high blood pressure and many other chronic diseases over a life- time." Barrett echoed Baker's comments, not- ing that a local health department is just one part of the solution. "The Institute of Medicine defined 'pub- lic health' as what we do collectively, as a society, to create the conditions in which people can be healthy," Barrett said in a statement. "Those conditions include not only access to health care and healthy indi- vidual behaviors, but also social, economic, and physical environmental factors. The health of Milwaukee, and Wisconsin, depends in large part on what we do, as a society, collectively, to address all of these factors." According to the 2014 rankings, the five healthiest counties in Wisconsin are Ozaukee, Kewaunee, Portage, Taylor and Door. The five counties in the poorest health are Menominee, Milwaukee, Adams, Marquette and Forest.
