permit. To avoid stiff fines and possible
confiscation, it is advisable to perform
due diligence before foraging in any
public area. Hamilton cautions that har-
vesting mushrooms in most state and
county parks is illegal, but all national
forest land is open to foragers. The
nearby Point Reyes National Seashore is
one of the only national parks that al-
lows individuals to collect mushrooms
within its boundaries, and foragers
must observe the "two gallon plus one
mushroom" limit.
Arriving back at the parking lot,
Hamilton leaves us with a new appre-
ciation for the complex craft of forag-
ing, along with a spice jar of his wild-
harvested Mycochef's Porcini Sea Salt
as a parting gift. It is a delicacy I will
use sparingly while conjuring the fond
memory of this forage adventure.
