In modern society, the concept of Valentine's Day is somewhat warped. As of now, it is a war of commercialism versus affection. Those who are against the holiday argue that it is just a hallmark holiday; a day invented by the fat cats to rob the 'in love' and shame the others. "Maybe the over-purchasing of last year's unsold candy will stimulate the economy." Some offer this as a reason that all may benefit from the holiday, while others point out the risk of food poisoning. Meanwhile, those who are for the holiday continue to defend their right to be in love and proud. Students continue to debate their opinions through logical reasoning and personal belief. Valentines Day Jack Murphy Junior "Yes, because everyone always seems happy and get things from someone who cares about them." Samantha Newton Junior "Yes, because I love spending it with my beautiful girlfriend." Eric Spencer Freshman "No, because roses die and chocolates make you fat." Mason Meadows Freshman "No, because I've had my heart broken too many times." People Divided Mr. Hein Teacher "No, I feel like it is a hallmark holiday marketed to sell chocolates and candy and flowers. Maybe we should take care of the people we care about every day." Mr. Kennedy Teacher "I'm married. Of course, I like Valentines Day." The students of Mr. Dais's 6th period class were polled. The numbers represent those who agreed with the specific point. There is just too much pressure to feel a certain way and it is just not enjoyable. Sometimes you just want to curl up in bed with a movie and not be acting out a sad scene from a bad movie in which the girl is alone on Valentine's day, because that's not what's up. Your friends will potentially have dates of their own and therefore cannot hang out with you. 5 2 4 You get to be festive and wear pink ribbons and demonstrate merriness. Strangers are likely to give you free chocolate. If you have a significant other, the two of you are probably going to have a jolly romantic time. Your classes are a little bit sillier, because it's a holiday and everyone's high on sugar and love. 3 16 6 19
