Sports Jeff Mandolfo Staff Writer The Red Bluff High School's girls basketball team begins league with a bang, but due to some injuries and players quitting, the team is at a decline but still expects a playoff berth. The girls began league with a 54 to 46 win over West Valley's Lady Eagles. Despite sophomore Katie Gallagher getting a concussion, the girls moved the ball well and shot with confidence. The second game at Foothill High School resulted at a 46- 33 win over the Cougars. The game started out slow and the Lady Spartans were behind at halftime, but came back and outplayed their opponents. When the girls played Enterprise High School knew it would be a tough game and simply wanted to come out and try their hardest as well as improve on their playing overall. The game resulted in the Lady Spartans first league loss putting the girls at a 2-1 league record. At the beginning of the February the varsity girls team played the Shasta Wolves at home. With three players injured they were short of posts on the bench. "Shasta had a lot of tall girls, our shots weren't falling we played good defense, injuries hurt us definitely," said junior Allison Winning. The turn out of that game was a loss of 52- 36. On the 11th of this month the girls played West Valley a second time and couldn't come out with the win and ended up with a loss 44-35, the girls at this point are now 2-3 in their league record. On the 13th the girls played Foothill again but when this was written they will have already played it. Though I was able to get some comments on how they will preform. "We can definitely win, even with a short bench and its Senior night so we want to win especially," said Winning. The girls play their next game at Enterprise High School on the 18th . Girls varsity basketball team affected by injuries The Red Bluff High School J.V. Girls Basketball team moves through the season with a league record of 1-3. The team suffered a loss against Shasta High School on Tuesday, February 4. Brittany Botell, a sophomore on the team, has been interested in basketball since around grade 5. According to Botell, the team has been doing well. "I feel like we get along really well," She stated. "We're really close." In practice, Botell stated, the team works a lot on their plays. They also work on a lot of conditioning with running. Stefanie Brunello, also a sophomore on the team, maintains a positive attitude towards the team's performance. According to Brunello, the team has had Alpine team works diligently to qualify for championship match Red Bluff High Schools Alpine team has been working diligently to be able to qualify for their upcoming championships in Lake Tahoe. Unfortunately, due to the fact that there has not been much snow on Mount Shasta, the ski team had to make up all of their missed races at Mount Bachelor in Oregon this last weekend. Due to the fact that there hasn't been enough snow at Mount Shasta for the alpine team to start their season on time, they had to make up Lexi Pritchard Staff Writer BLUFFER/Jeffery Mandolfo Ryan Fisher Sports Writer for all of these missed races by last weekend traveling to Mount Shasta and making up six races in a total of three days. The first day the team competed they raced two races which were Giant Slaloms. The second day the team raced three races which were Slalom. Finally on the teams last day they raced one Giant Slalom. Based on the times each girl and boy Skier and Snowboarder got determined whether or not they qualify for championships. Championships for Ski team will start March 3 through 6 at Tahoe. In order for the Skiers and snow boarders to qualify for the championships three guy and girl snow boarders as well as skiers must qualify in the top three times in a Slalom race for Red Bluff. Also, three guy and girl snow boarders must achieve the top three times for Red Bluff in a Giant Slalom race. Once the skiers and snow boarders achieve this then they qualify for the North Star Championships. Even though the Red Bluff Alpine team has faced many challenges this season being the lack of snow they are working hard and readying themselves for Championships. some close losses, so the game still keeps its interest. Brunello feels good about her teammates and their relationship with each other. "We've really come together as a team," Brunello stated. "We work well together and get along really well." Brunello is thankful for the coach they have and how she pushes them. She stated, "We have to run every day in practice, but [the coach] believes in us and knows we can do our best." To anyone interested in basketball, she also said to "work hard and do all that you can do." Caitlyn Igarta, a sophomore on the team, says that the team is doing well. She has been playing basketball since middle school, and her favorite part about the sport is "Everything." According to Igarta, the team members enjoy the sport and stay enthusiastic. "We work well as a team," she said. "Just have fun and enjoy it, I guess." Igarta believes that the JV girls basketball team begins to wrap up season with high hopes of ending strong Boys soccer preps for upcoming games Lexi Pritchard Staff Writer team's toughest opponent is Enterprise. Rayann Childers, another sophomore on the J.V. team, has been playing basketball since second grade. According to Childers, they are having a hard season. Despite this, she keeps a good attitude towards her teammates. Childers said, "We're working together more, and getting to know each other better." Also in spite of the team's tough season, Childers still has a soft spot for the sport. "I love it," she says. "You get to know people, make friends, and be competitive." After their game against West Valley High School on Tuesday, February 11, as well as the Pink Out on Thursday, February 13, the J.V. Girls Basketball team looks to the future as more chances and games arise for the team to do better. "We're working together more, and getting to know each other better." -Rayann Childers With their season coming to an end the Red Bluff boys soccer team has had many memorable games, with some of their toughest opponents with whom they will play against in order to qualify for the upcoming playoffs. Today the Red Bluff boys soccer team will compete against West Valley at 4:30, this game will take place at West Valley High school, and however the boys team does after this game will be a huge determiner on whether or not they have a chance at qualifying for the play offs. This game is also the soccer team's last game of the season. Members of the team believe that even though West Valley has beaten them twice, they still have a good chance at beating them. "It'd be nice to beat West Valley and end the season on a high note." Garrett Ward, Senior Some of the most memorable games for this Red Bluff team was when they competed against Shasta High School and although they lost, the soccer players still feel as though Shasta is one of their biggest competitors. Another big competitor of Red Bluff was Paradise High School which they brought home a 3-1 win. With their season coming to an end, the Red Bluff boys have had many memorable experiences and are trying to end their overall season on a high note.
