Well, the Red Bluff High School Drama class is working hard to prepare the musical, "Once Upon a Mattress." The musical will be performed on Friday and Saturday, the 14 and 15 of Feb. in the PAC at 6 pm. The musical is similar to the very popular children's fairy tale book, The Princess and the Pea, said Brianna Penner. The Princess and the Pea was written by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. The musical originally opened off Although it is being debated whether attendance at RBHS has decreased compared to previous years, reports obtained from the Data System show that class period attendance has dropped significantly compared to last school year (shown in graphic to the right). In addition to this, the number of nonverified absences from the same time period has almost doubled, skyrocketing from 5,037 nonverified absences in the 2012/13 school year, to 10,000 for this current school year and time frame. It is clear that something is causing this decline in attendance; however, it's not explicit why this drop is happening. Differing from the reports, John Schwabauer, Dean of Students, believes attendance has remained consistent, explaining that he has been monitoring data. Contrasting from previous years, Red Bluff High does not have a decisive attendance policy. The school is currently going through SARB to deal with habitually absent/truant students after choosing to get rid of the old policy at the beginning of the school year. "It needed to be revamped," according to Schwabauer. Without an attendance policy for this school year, a commitee of eight members, made up of faculty at RBHS, was chosen in October to construct a new and improved policy. According to Kristine Durfee, the leader of the commitee, they have been collaborating and visiting other schools in order to gain insight on an array of policies. The committee, however, is only given their lunches to work towards building a new policy. The goal is to have a presentable policy by March and a finalized version for next school year. Broadway in May of 1959 at the Phoenix Theater. Brianna's role, a senior, is to play the queen who is the villain in the musical. "I am evil, over bearing, obsessed with my son and horrible to every princess," said Penner. She also said that she has been in the Performing Arts Center for four years and this is the most difficult play yet, but it's going to be worth it. Her favorite experience while working on the play has been enjoying her time with the wonderful and determined cast. Penner says the play is super hilarious and everyone must come to see it. In this musical, Brianna Penner is the queen and she tries to keep her son from marrying any Princess that is "unworthy". The queen's son, Dauntless, is performed by Kyle Beal. The infamous princess who lays upon the mattress is being performed by senior Caitlin Ruszczyk. Another important cast member, Hansel Haytasingh, who hasn't ever been in a play before, said, "This is an outstanding experience for me and has shown me the process of putting together a high school play." His role in the play is of a knight who sings, yells, jumps, and dances. Hansel said that putting a play together is a lot more work than he had ever imagined. The drama class has been working on the play for around 5 weeks now with the director as Lisa Ernst. Get your Mr. Spartan tickets while you can-they will sell out fast! The faster you buy your ticket, the better your seat. Tickets are eight dollars without ASB and six dollars with ASB. Mitchell Sauve, another outstanding cast member, is starring as Sir Harry. Mitchell said, "This play is going to be good, but it is scary because we have only been working on it for one month." According to Mitchell, musicals normally take around 3 months, so the drama class is practicing hard in order to perform on Friday and Saturday. With all the hard work and dedication among the entire cast and production crew, "Once Upon a Mattress" is a must see for your Valentine's Day entertainment. Durfee commented, "There are no consequences at this point of what missing a class will entail and all areas are affected by attendance."
