Scene The O-Town Editor's Note|By Emily Popek I don't remember the first ska song I ever heard, but I do remember buying, for some reason, a bootleg copy of a Madness album at a garage sale when I was in junior high. I couldn't stop listening to "One Step Beyond." The song has no lyrics other than the title words, but the rousing horn melody and bouncing beat got me hooked. Much like Kaler Carpenter of the Oneon- ta church/concert venue The Redemption Movement, I was in high school when the "third wave" of ska reached tsunami sta- tus. There were plenty of local ska bands to go see, usually at local coffee shops or other small venues much like Carpenter's River Street storefront. I remember learning to skank — the elbows-flying dance associated with ska — at one show so crowded that the eager fans kept falling right into the band, knocking over their mic stands. But it was all in good fun. There's something about a ska show (no matter how many skinheads might be there) that seems to inspire good feelings. You can hear more from Carpen- ter, and other locals, on pages 8-9. If ska isn't your thing, there are plenty of other great events coming up this month as the region starts edging toward a thaw. You can check them out on pages 12-13. And music columnist Mark Boshnack serves up a decidedly different brand of music in this month's write-up of Devonte Hynes' "Cupid Deluxe" — just in time for Valentine's Day. Want to see your event listed in the Scene? Have a great idea for a story? Let me know. There's too much cool stuff hap- pening around here for me to keep track of it all on my own. You can reach Emily F. Popek at 432-1000, ext. 217, or epopek@ thedailystar.com. I Was A High School Skank — In A Good Way 2 O-Town Scene February 6, 2014
