Editor's Picks Jan. 10 'World of Color' opening reception 5 to 7 p.m. Upstairs Gallery, Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center, 24 Market St. If you need a little color to liven up the dreary days of winter, look no further than Foothills, where an exhibit of Christine Alexander's vibrant paintings will be in display through the end of February. Alexander's work is rioutously colorful, combining motifs from nature into vivid, abstract collage-like images. The opening reception will feature live jazz music by Carleton Clay and Rich Mollin. Jan. 17 New York Funk Exchange 8 p.m. | $10-$12 Oneonta Theatre, 47 Chestnut St. www.oneontatheatre.com The nine-piece Brooklyn outfit New York Funk Exchange has been keeping booties shaking since 2007. Its 2009 debut album "The Funkonomic Stimulus Plan" introduced the band's signature sound, which it describes as "a body-shaking mix of old school funk, jazz, soul and R&B." Fronted by sultry siren Serena Fortier, the group is a favorite at festivals, and maintains a residency at Club Groove NYC in the West Village. The band has rocked the Oneonta Theatre before; don't miss this set as a great way to warm up your winter nights. New York Funk Exchange Jan. 18 HR (of Bad Brains) and Dubb Agents 7:30 p.m. | $10-$15 Hunt Union Ballroom, SUNY Oneonta As frontman for the legendary hardcore punk band Bad Brains, H.R. "Human Rights" was allegedly described in a Village Voice review as "like James Brown gone berserk, with a hyperkinetic repertoire of spins, dives, back-flips, splits and skanks." Whether or not that ever actually appeared in the Village Voice, it doesn't matter; the point is, Bad Brains shows were, and are, extraordinary explosions of punk-fueled energy. In H.R.'s case, the punk ethos is informed by a Rastafarian belief system, and his music includes nods to reggae and dub. His performance at SUNY Oneonta will be as part of his new project, HR & the Dubb Agents. Jan. 18 Orpheus Theatre 30th anniversary cabaret revue 8 p.m. | $50 Otesaga Hotel, Cooperstown 432-9392, orpheustheatre.org If you've lived in Oneonta for more than a couple years, you are almost definitely connected, via the "Six Degrees of Separation" method, to Orpheus Theatre. If you haven't been involved in one of their productions, then chances are your friends, your co-workers, maybe your doctor or your professor, has been. The theater company is marking its 30th anniversary with a gala "30 songs for 30 years" performance at the plush Otesaga Resort Hotel, featuring a who's who of Orpheus stalwarts old and new.
