THE BACKSTORY BROADACRES MARKETPLACE | NOVEMBER 3, 2013 We'd already been at the Broadacres Marketplace and Events Center for a while when I met 9-year-old Anthony Alvarez. We'd already tried a fruit called nanchi, bought Mexican candy and snacked on pumpkin seeds and fresh roasted peanuts. We'd already listened to live music from Conjunto Peña Blanca and stopped to chat with longtime vendor Tony Monda and his white-faced capuchin monkey, Don Juan. But I was still looking for two more things: something with the image of Jesus, and Mexican luchador masks. I lucked out when I found Alvarez, at the market for the first time, trying on masks with his father, looking for the perfect fit. –Steve Marcus 56_Backstory_20131107.indd 56 11/6/13 1:42 PM
