FROM THE PUBLISHER continued from page 23 ney through his beloved and now destroyed Jersey Shore. Rarely has there been a book that has documented in such detail the aftermath of a catastrophic storm. With more than 350 historic photographs in both volumes, these important books preserve what happened to this region for future generations lest they forget the unfathomable power of the sea. A portion of the profits from these books is being donated to various charities that help the victims of the storm. For more information, please see page 27. In keeping with one of this magazine's ongoing themes—the preservation and conservation of the Shore's environment—our "Beachcomber" section presents three articles on the storm's impact to Barnegat Bay, the coastal lakes, and the plant and animal life. Also inside, "The New Beachfront" by Gordon Hesse explains how our coastline will change after the Army Corp of Engineers constructs a new, twenty-two-foot-high dune system on all of our beaches with the hope of protecting residents from future storms. Our "Jersey Shore Homes" feature, "Raising The Jersey Shore," summarizes the huge challenges faced by tens of thousands of shore residents in raising their homes to meet the new flood insurance guidelines. This challenge is, for many, just as difficult as rebuilding their homes after the storm. Further exploring the human aspect of the storm, author and poet Frank Finale's essay, "The Survivor's Of Sandy," discusses the unreported human suffering that continues at the shore since the Superstorm. Our "Jersey Shore Profile" feature is about Joe Leone Introna and John Hilla, owners of Joe Leone's Italian Specialties in Point Pleasant Beach and Sea Girt. The story of their charitable acts after the Superstorm and the building of their landmark business by pursing and achieving excellence in what they do is an inspiration for us all. Lastly, our "Jersey Shore Images" feature is about the Seaside Park and Seaside Heights boardwalk—and the September 12 fire that destroyed and damaged five blocks including what was left of Funtown Pier (after Sandy) and more than fifty of the rebuilt businesses. Gordon' Hesse's beautiful nighttime photographs of the now gone, iconic businesses capture what it was like there and what we hope will once again return. The off-season at the Jersey Shore is a time of beauty and peace, and for many local residents and visitors, it is a favorite time.
