Standing on a high dune overlooking the sandy beach and Atlantic Ocean, The Bluffs of Bay Head, New Jersey was one of the last great, old Jersey Shore resort hotels. For more than a century, this Victorian landmark was the summer destination for the affluent from Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey as well as the year-round meeting place for the "locals." This is former employee Francine LaVance Robertshaw's inside story of The Bluffs. Through her research, interviews, experiences, photographs, and documents, you will meet the owners as well as many of the employees, hotel guests, and bar patrons who made The Bluffs unique and charming over the decades. Rarely has there been a book that has documented in such detail the story of a hotel. This beautifully-crafted volume contains more than three hundred historic photographs, documents, and facsimile reproductions as well as more than a dozen paintings. The book is divided into three chapters: The Hotel, The Bar, and The Memories (written by dozens of Bluffs' hotel guests, bar patrons, and employees), plus an Appendix of documents that includes twenty pull-out facsimile reproductions featuring a 1936 map of the area, a circa 1910 Bluffs booklet brochure, historic restaurant and bar menus, hotel rate schedules, vintage postcards, and more. $24.95 Actual Size: 6 1/4" x 9 1/4" Hardcover with dust jacket, 240 pages $19.95 Actual Size: 6" x 9" Softcover, 240 pages The Poets of New Jersey celebrates sixty-five extraordinary poets who have lived and worked in New Jersey, from Colonial times to the present. Many of the poets included in this anthology are among America's finest. Stephen Dunn, the Pulitzer Prize poet, writes the Foreword; X. J. Kennedy, the renowned poet, writes the Introduction. The three editors, Emanuel di Pasquale, Frank Finale, and Sander Zulauf, all poets themselves, had one simple criterion in compiling the works: they "wanted to hear the pure, clear words of the poets who have called this place home." They were interested in the sum of poetic greatness distilled from life in this state—the poetry New Jersey poets have written, whether New Jersey oriented or not. The editors reached back to the earliest poets, including Philip Freneau, the Revolutionary War's "Father of American Poetry"; Walt Whitman, the "revolutionizer" of poetry; and Stephen Crane, the poet who bridged the realists to the moderns. They included three key figures of modernism, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, and Kenneth Burke, as well as their direct descendants—the poets of the Beat Generation—Allen Ginsberg and Amiri Baraka. New Jersey's three other current Pulitzer Prize poets, Yusef Komunyakaa, C. K. Williams, and Paul Muldoon are also included. The result is a beautiful book of poetry for the ages. All Summer Long — Tales and Lore of Lifeguarding on the Atlantic — $24.95 Actual Size: 6 1/4" x 9 1/4" Hardcover with dust jacket, 208 pages All Summer Long captures behind-the-scenes stories of beach culture and life over a span of seven decades (particularly the '60s and '70s) as seen and told by lifeguards in their own words. Whether you are a beachgoer or one of the few who has guarded our shores, many of these accounts will bring back memories of good days gone by. Author Gordon Hesse lifeguarded for ten years on the beaches of New Jersey and Florida. Based on his own experiences and interviews with nearly three dozen men and women lifeguards (most from Lavallette, a small coastal town on the Jersey Shore), All Summer Long is a compilation of beach tales and lore that traces the evolution of lifeguarding on the Atlantic. Drawn from a long oral tradition, these first-person accounts and recollections tell of triumphs and tragedies and offer insight into lifeguarding's heritage, training, hazing rituals, friendships, and social scene. Also, some of the significant changes in guarding are discussed, including the introduction and acceptance of women as ocean lifeguards. Readers will meet these lively and interesting personalities and be transported to the beach. Spring Lake, Revisited — A Portrait of the Victorian Era at the Jersey Shore — $50. Actual Size: 12 1/4" x 12 1/4" Hardcover with dust jacket, 208 pages This limited-edition, oversized volume features more than 200 color photographs of Spring Lake's Victorian era, a time of decorum and manners, grand hotels and magnificent mansions, and parasol strolls along the boardwalk. Over three years in the making, each of "Spring Lake, Revisited's" images have been carefully preserved and digitally enhanced to reveal the ultimate view into Spring Lake's glorious past. Author Patrick Smith (grandson of William Schreck, the one-time owner of The Sandpiper Hotel) presents his grandfather's collection of postcards and photographs with informative descriptions of each image that bring Spring Lake's past to life while pointing out the many details and real life happenings of 100 years ago that reveal the humanity of the time. Most of the scenes you'll view in this beautiful, haunting folio are now gone forever. Its eight chapters include: Panoramic Views of the Town, On the Beach and Boardwalk, A Visual Walking Tour Around the Lake, The Grand Hotels, Churches and Houses of Worship, Public Buildings and Private Clubs, Mansions and Other Private Homes, and Street Scenes Around Town.
