MAIL JIM CARUSO'S CAST PARTY WITH BILLY STRITCH Called "the gold standard of open mic nights" by the Wall Street Journal, Jim Caruso's Cast Party is a cool cabaret night out. Led by musical director Billy Stritch, showbiz superstars hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. Turns out, "Battle Born" isn't the state's official motto. Here I always thought it should have been "Come on, baby, seven or 11!" –Ronny Wolf HELLO, PERFECTION Three Weekly staffers shared the itineraries of their dream days in last week's "Las Vegas For Everyone" package. Readers chimed in online, offering elements of their perfect days. Raw oysters at Bachannal Buffet at Caesars Palace. –Diane Askwyth A Manhattan at Queue Bar at the Cosmo. –Kevin Day A 75-degree July 1st, my birthday. –Walter Hess A day in a luxurious spa! –Pam Doherty Bray A swim at Mandalay Bay, a ride in a gondola with someone special and dinner at Picasso and frontrow seats to O. –John Froehlich BEHOLD, SLOTZILLA Will the giant, slot-themed zipline above the Fremont Street Experience be a win for Downtown? Let the debate begin. I think Vegas as a city in the sand needs to take a page from the Arab city of Dubai in architectural feats and stop being so gaudy. –Jon Robinson Las Vegas, constantly pushing the boundaries of bad taste. How I love thee. –John Bartlett EDITOR'S NOTE k We don't usually spend our Saturday nights in Elko, but on September 28, Las Vegas Weekly headed north for the 2013 Nevada Press Association Awards, the annual honors recognizing the best journalism in the Silver State. And the Weekly hardly left empty-handed. Far from it, the Weekly and sister publications the Las Vegas Sun, VEGAS INC and Las Vegas Magazine combined to win 96 awards, including 46 first-place journalism honors, more than any other media company in Nevada. In the urban weekly category, the Weekly was named best overall publication, an award that honors both editorial and advertising, and lasvegasweekly.com also took first place in its class. Weekly journalists Andrea Domanick, Sarah Feldberg, John Katsilometes, Spencer Patterson and Kristen Peterson also took home first-place awards in various categories during the night, as did photographers Steve Marcus and Leila Navidi. Of course, we're not resting on our shiny new laurels. We're back at it already, creating the kind of stories that will keep you reading and perhaps even win a few of next year's awards. Congratulations to all the journalists and publications honored in Elko. See you in 2014. For the complete list of winners, visit lasvegasweekly.com.
