...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE OCTOBER 2013 john katsilometes For this issue, longtime Las Vegas Sun columnist John Katsilometes interviewed our cover star, Jimmy Kimmel. How did you enjoy your talk with Jimmy? Jimmy Kimmel is quick-witted, focused, and opinionated in conversation—in other words, an ideal interview subject. We share many of the same comedic heroes, particularly David Letterman, and I could detect some of Letterman's influence in the way Kimmel interviewed his guests during the show I attended. He also has a certain Rat Pack–like swagger onstage—not a rote impression but a sort of old-Vegas vibe, straight and confident, that speaks to his heritage in our city. leila navidi Leila Navidi, who photographed cocktails for this issue's drink pages, has been a staff photographer at the Las Vegas Sun since 2007. She is shooting in Michigan until next summer. What do you like about shooting in Vegas? Vegas is quirky, unpredictable, roberta naas Award-winning watch industry journalist Roberta Naas, who penned our watch feature, regularly writes about timepieces for Vegas and its sister Niche Media titles. Naas is the founder and editor-in-chief of the website ATimelyPerspective.com, a well-respected authority on luxury watches. What makes Las Vegas a great watch town? Vegas is a city of bright lights day and night, and if you walk the casinos, there are no clocks anywhere. A great wristwatch is a statement piece, a way to meet people and show off who you are. So if you're not wearing one, when you win big, go buy one. Vegas has one of the best watch selections in the country. Why do you love watches? Watches are in my blood. I've been writing about them for almost 30 years and have loved them as long as I can remember. They are full of design finesse, technology, and life. 32 colorful, shiny, bright, sunny, sweaty, and bold. From the strippers and the Cirque clowns to the politicians and fanny pack– wearing tourists, Vegas is a photographer's paradise. Shooting for Vegas takes me behind the scenes of the Strip, my favorite place to be. Are you ready for the Midwest winter? I am feverishly shopping for warm coats. michael kaplan The writer of our "Power Strip" story on Seth Schorr, Brooklyn-based journalist Michael Kaplan is the gambling columnist for Cigar Aficionado and the author of books including Aces and Kings: Inside Stories and Million-Dollar Strategies from Poker's Greatest Players. Do you visit Vegas often? I do. I write quite a bit about the casino business and the gambling scene. I love the great restaurants (Bartolotta at Wynn is my favorite), checking out cocktail lounges, and doing a bit of gambling. What were your impressions of Seth Schorr? Seth struck me as a smart, ambitious guy who knows how to find his edges where others in the industry fail to look. VEGASMAGAZINE.COM 032_V_FOB_Contribs_Oct13.indd 32 9/19/13 11:29 AM
