Boulder Highway, Henderson, 566-1570 A Strange Brand of Happy (Not reviewed) Joe Boyd, Rebecca St. James, Shirley Jones. Directed by Brad Wise. 95 minutes. Rated PG-13. A man learns about faith and romance thanks to a group of retirees. Theaters: SC NOW PLAYING 2 Guns AABCC Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Paula Patton. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur. 109 minutes. Rated R. 2 Guns follows two undercover government agents who team up to rob a bank and end up chased by a competing lineup of bad guys. It's a good thing that Washington and Wahlberg make for such an entertaining pair, because otherwise the movie is pretty much a mess. –JB Theaters: BS, COL, DI, FH, ORL, SC, SP, TX Closed Circuit AAABC Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciaran Hinds. Directed by John Crowley. 100 minutes. Rated R. Bana and Hall play a pair of London lawyers assigned to defend a suspected terrorist. The filmmakers keep the suspense going without resorting to cheap fake-outs or absurd twists, and even if the movie doesn't make any big statements, it tells a story well enough that it doesn't need to. –JB Theaters: CAN, COL, GVR, ORL, SC, SP The Conjuring AABCC Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston. Directed by James Wan. 112 minutes. Rated R. Set in 1971, The Conjuring features top-notch period detail and some nice homages to horror movies of that era. But the story of a nice family calling on a pair of ghost hunters to rid their house of evil spirits is formulaic and anticlimactic, and the stylish scares eventually offer diminishing returns. –JB Theaters: BS, ORL, TC, TX beyond that. –JB Theaters: TC Despicable Me 2 AABCC Voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt. Directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. 98 minutes. Rated PG. Reformed super-villain Gru (Carell) teams up with a top-secret crime-fighting force and falls for his new partner (Wiig). Gru's little yellow minions can be amusing, but they aren't enough to carry the movie, which has an underwhelming villain and a weak emotional core. –JB Theaters: AL, BS, CH, COL, FH, ORL, SC, SP, TX Elysium AABCC Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley. Directed by Neill Blomkamp. 109 minutes. Rated R. Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9 imagines a future in which the 1 percent live blissfully on an orbiting space station called Elysium while most of Earth's population suffers on the home planet. A heavy-handed allegory for America's immigration debate is all this leaden action flick has to offer. –MD Theaters: AL, DI, GVR, ORL, RR, SF, SHO, SP, SS, ST, TS, TX, VS Blue Jasmine AAACC Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin. Directed by Woody Allen. 98 minutes. Rated PG-13. Blanchett's showy performance in the title role is the highlight of Allen's latest, about a scandalruined widow who moves in with her working-class sister (Hawkins) and tries to start her life anew. It's a loose riff on A Streetcar Named Desire, but Tennessee Williams can rest easy. –MD Theaters: COL, ORL, SP, ST, VS The Croods AABCC Voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds. Directed by Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders. 91 minutes. Rated PG. A family of cavemen must change or face extinction in this inoffensive but unremarkable DreamWorks animated tale. There are some beautiful and inventive creations among the prehistoric animals, but the story is predictable and rote, suitable for keeping kids occupied but not much (COL) REGAL COLONNADE 8880 S.
