WITH APPROVED CREDIT Black Friday HOLIDAY DISCOUNTS Troopers ramping up patrols during peak Thanksgiving travel Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. A A A predicts 54.6 mil- lion people will head out for the holiday. Of those, nearly 49 million will travel by car, a rebound to almost pre-pan- demic levels. This time of year is also as- sociated with higher drinking rates, which, combined with the sheer number of drivers on the road, makes it an espe- cially dangerous time for mo- torists. To prevent crashes, the In- diana State Police Jasper Post will ramp up enforcement as part of the Safe Family Travel campaign. Starting this week, officers will be out in greater numbers conducting satura- tion patrols designed to dis- courage impaired driving and promote seat belt use. Safe Family Travel opera- tions begin before Thanksgiv- ing each year and run through New Year's Day. The extra high-visibility enforcement is funded with grants provid- ed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through the Indi- ana Criminal Justice Insti- tute (ICJI). Jasper Post Commander Lt. Jason Allen, said, "Thank you for not drinking and driving and for doing your part to en- sure everyone reaches their destination safely." According to NHTSA, drunk driving and fatal crash- es spike during the Thanks- giving holidays. This can be attributed, in part, to cultur- al phenomena like "Blackout Wednesday" or "Drinksgiv- ing," an event synonymous with heavy alcohol consump- tion. This year's holiday also comes at a time when fatal crashes and dangerous driv- ing are up across the state and nation. In Indiana, 932 peo- ple lost their lives on the road last year, a 4% increase from 2020. Of those fatalities, 12 oc- curred during the Thanksgiv- ing holiday season, with more than half (7) found unbuckled at the time of the crash. On average, approximate- ly one-fourth of the state's traffic fatalities are caused by drunk drivers. "Impaired driving is life-threatening, but even more so around the holidays," said Robert Duck- worth, ICJI Traffic Safety Di- rector. "With so many ride op- tions available, there's no rea- son that should be the case. We ask everyone to plan ac- cordingly and to make safety a priority. Our goal is zero fa- talities this year." With officers on high alert, motorists are encouraged to plan to get home safely by des- ignating a sober driver or by using public transportation or a ride service like Uber or Lyft. Even if one drink is con- sumed, never drive impaired or let friends get behind the wheel if they've been drink- ing. It's also important to wear a seat belt, put away distrac- tions and follow posted speed limits. Travelers are encour- aged to check road condi- tions before each trip and to leave with plenty of time to reach their destination safe- ly. "We're anticipating a very busy travel season this year, so for those sharing the road, remember to slow down, drive sober and buckle up," said Devon McDonald, ICJI Ex- ecutive Director. "Most fatal crashes are avoidable, not in- evitable. We want everyone to make it to the Thanksgiving table safely." Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal in Indiana and all 50 states. Those who choose to drive impaired are not only risking their life and the lives of oth- ers but also could face an ar- rest, jail time, and substantial fines and attorney fees. The average drunk driving arrest costs up to $10,000. Motorists are encouraged to contact the department or call 911 if they encounter an impaired or un- safe driver on the road. Chat with Petersburg Police Chief Kyle Mills Petersburg Police Chief Kyle Mills wanted to be able to reach out and communi- cate with Peters- burg residents, so a Chat With the Chief col- umn will be pub- lished that Chief Mills writes the last week of every month. We hope you enjoy hear- ing from your lo- cal police chief. From 10/16/2022 to 11/22/2022 our department had 273 incident reports/calls for service. We made or assist- ed in 11 arrests that included charges of domestic battery, DUI, Possession of Metham- phetamine and more. Petersburg Police Depart- ment (PPD) participated in Trunk or Treat at Petersburg Elementary and Safe Stop Trick or Treat at the Police Department on Halloween. Officers who participated in these events said there were more kids out this year than any year they can remember. I want to remind the com- munity to keep vehicles locked when parked and left unattended. Oth- er communities around us have seen an uptick in vehicle thefts where items are being taken out of vehicles and in most cases the vehicles were left unlocked. We have not received any re- ported thefts in our community recently and this is just an advised precau- tion. Most targeted items are guns, wallets, purses, elec- tronics, money and anything else that might be considered of value. PPD hired Benjamin Hess as a full-time patrol officer. Ben grew up in Petersburg, is a graduate of Pike Central High School, Vincennes Uni- versity and has worked at the Pike County Security Center as a Jailer for the past three years. We are excited to bring him on board. Welcome, Ben.
