Shadows and Movement at WKC Get in touch with your creative side with two innovative workshops being offered this month by the West Kortright Centre. EAST MEETS WEST: MOVEMENT. MEDITATION. MUSIC In its fourth year at WKC, East Meets West offers an innovative, creative mindbody experience like no other. In a media release, WKC said of the workshops, "Through exercises that emphasize imagination, improvisation and transformation, Lanny (Harrison) will lead the group on voyages of theatrical exploration and contemplative practice" in a series of four "explor- 20 atory and playful" evening sessions. While the workshops incorporate aspects of theater and dance, no experience is needed; "just an open mind, and a body wearing some comfortable clothes," according to the folks at WKC. Movement will be accompanied by music, including some live performance. The workshops, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 8-29, will be in Harris' barn/studio in East Meredith. Take all four workshops for the full experience, or just drop in on one or more. The cost is $60 for all four, or $15 each, with a discount for WKC members. Registration isn't required, but it is recommended. SHADOW PUPPETS If your idea of shadow puppetry involves making a doggie face with your hand, prepare to be amazed. Oneonta artist and professional puppeteer John Ryan will lead participants in an Aug. 16-18 workshop in producing a fully realized shadow-puppet production culminating in a live performance. Ryan, whose work is inspired by folklore and natural history, has toured nationally with The Catskill Puppet Theatre, performing in venues such as the Smithsonian Museum. As a puppet builder and performer, he has worked with Thought Alarm Theatre, Oneonta Improv and Orpheus Theatre. Ryan is a BFA graduate of the Art Institute of Boston. Participants in Ryan's workshop will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 16 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 and 18 to write vignettes, create characters and craft individual shadow puppets. A performance will begin at 3 p.m. Aug. 18 for participants to show their stuff. The workshop is open to everyone ages 16 and older at a cost of $120, with a discount for WKC members. Registration is required; call 278-5454 or visit http://bit.ly/13V7R4C. Puppeteer John Ryan will lead participants in a shadow puppet workshop Aug. 16-18.
