He taught instrumental music for three years in Gaston County, auditioned for the Air Force band in 1988, and worked until 2012 when he retired from the Air Force. He met his wife, Shauna, in Texas "…while stationed there with the Air Force band" and they have three children, Tyler, Lilly and Sophie. He has two stepsons, Frank and Andrew, and most recently two granddaughters, Lydia and Hazel. His preferred lesson/ learning style is simple, he said. "I'm required to use classroom textbook lessons, but I really prefer hands-on activities. especially when you get to build rockets and launch them on campus, or fly quad 'copters and fixed- wing model aircraft." Lastly, it is to be noted the class's Mission statement is: "Develop citizens of charac- ter dedicated to serving their nation and community." Their Goals: "Instill val- ues of citizenship, service to the United States, per- sonal responsibility, and sense of accomplishment;" and finally, their Core Values are: "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do."
