Copy Editor/Paginator Contrary to popular opinion, newspapers are not dead. In fact, outside the metropolitan areas, newspapers are busier than ever. Sagamore News Media is looking for someone to work in news, but it's not a traditional news job. It's a combination of the old rim and slot positions from copy desks of old, pagination and compiling news from various sources from copy desks of today and some writing and photo work. We have award winning publications and are looking for someone who wants to help us build on that. We are looking for someone who is innovative, creative, works well on deadline and has a passion for news. Experience in InDesign and pagination is a plus, but we can train as well. Please send resume and cover letter to jobs@ thepaper24-7.com. Photo Editor The Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana, is seeking a talented, committed and enthusiastic community journalist to serve as the newspaper's photo editor. The position requires not only a great eye for news, sports and features photos, but also the organizational skills to edit and oversee visuals for our website, print editions and special publications, including magazines and coffee table books. The photo editor works closely with reporters, editors and freelance photographers. It's a great opportunity at an award-winning newspaper near Indianapolis. Send letter of application, resume, references and portfolio link to the editor at scott.underwood@ heraldbulletin.com. Have a job listing you want to promote? Employment opportunities On Sept. 22, the Senate Judiciary Committee completed its markup of the bipartisan Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) (S. 673 and H.R. 1735). The JCPA would allow local news publishers to come together to collectively negotiate with Google and Facebook for fair compensa- tion for use of their content, as small and local publishers currently do not have the ability to negotiate these deals on their own, as the dominant tech platforms capture the majority of U.S. digital ad revenue, leaving local publishers with little to reinvest in the production of high-quality journalism. After incorporating several amendments, the Committee ultimately voted to report the JCPA out favorably and send the bill to the Senate floor. "We applaud Senators Klobuchar, Kennedy, Durbin and Grassley for their support of the JCPA and their dedication to sustaining quality journalism. This's markup and vote was a major step towards getting small and local news publishers the fair compensation they deserve for their content," said News/Media Alliance President & CEO David Chavern. "We thank Chairman Nadler, Chairman Cicilline, and Ranking Member Buck for their support for local journalism," ," Chavern said. News/Media Alliance is calling on Chairman Nadler to bring the ing bill before the House Judiciary Committee for a vote before the midterm elections. — News Media Alliance The Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for its next class of inductees to join the more than 200 distinguished members representing the best of Indiana journalism. Report for America applications are due Oct. 3 for organizations interested in partnering to host emerging and experienced journalists in their newsrooms for up to three years, beginning next summer. Report for America is a national service program that places talented journalists—corps members—into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. Through the program, host newsrooms receive: • Service-minded reporters, photographers and videographers • Diverse, hand-picked candidates from a pool of emerging and experienced journalists • Subsidized salary support, up to half for the first year "Report for America provides a unique opportunity for newsrooms to bring journalists on staff at a time when the need for local, trusted news is more important than ever," said Earl Johnson, director of admissions. Newsrooms will be publicly announced in December. The PRESS Act establishes reasonable ground rules for when the government can obtain confidential source information from journalists or their third-party service providers. "A free and independent press is vital to democracy, and the PRESS Act ensures that journalists maintain editorial independence by protecting their confidential source information. Without these protections, journalists are at risk of government intimidation, losing sources and being unable to produce quality news," NMA President David Chavern said. — News Media Alliance News in brief Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame nominations due Oct. 31 PRESS Act passes House with bi-partisan support News/Media Alliance applauds Senate markup of JCPA Report for America newsroom applications due Oct. 3
