POWELL CF Media michael@cfmedia.info In 2021 the Steve Borders Family and Elizabeth Baptist Church wanted to do something special to recognize and honor Cleveland County law enforce- ment, so they thought a delicious lunch would be just the thing. It was, so they decided to capitalize on that theme once again. So, on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022 the Borders' invited Cleveland County law enforcement officers and staff to a second annual hot dog luncheon in their honor, which was held at the Borders' farm and cabin, located just outside of Waco. Here the men and women of the Cleveland County law enforce- ment community, as well as a group of locally-based NC State Troopers, were treated to a great lunch with all the fixings, by Mr. and Mrs. Borders, their church friends, and others, just to say, "Thank you once again for your service, sacrifice, and for protect- ing our community!" The feast took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Attending again were Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford, Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman, and many officers and support person- nel from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, the Shelby Police Department, the Kings Mountain Police Department, and NC State Troopers. Borders is a former educator, Interim School Superintendent, and Director of Administration for Cleveland County Schools, and his wife, Cindy, said their friends and church members assisted at the cookout, along with their daughter, Grover Elementary School principal, Brandy Curtis. A banner from Grover's stu- dents was presented again, made by Grover art teacher Jenny Hollifield. Mrs. Curtis noted 350 of the school's students, with the help of Grover's Guidance Counselor, Wendy Loomis, wrote "thank you" notes, which were handed out to the officers, along with other "freebies" from Elizabeth Baptist Church. Volunteers helping with the cooking and serving this year included Jerry and Joyce Gardner, Dickie Hayes, Jamie Jones, Jim Hollingsworth, Lacey Ange, Rick and Meda Dixon, Rick and Lisa Washburn, Susan Johnson, Amelia Borders, Brian Cook and Tony Berry. Cindy Borders said of the event at the beginning of the Sept. 13 meal, "We hope it will be double from what we had last year (125 at 2021's luncheon)!" Steve agreed, adding, "We hope to be able to keep this going on every year. We have more volunteers this year too." Representative Kelly Hastings (R-NC House, Dist. 110) praised Steve and Cindy for thinking of the law enforcement officers by provid- ing the luncheon for them. Said Rep. Hastings, "It is an honor to be here and show support for our law officers." His sentiment was echoed by Cleveland County Commissioner Ronnie Whetstone. Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford said, "A simple 'thank you' goes a long way, especially in today's world. All of us here need a brief recharge and what the Borders' do here for us all is just what is needed." Sheriff Alan Norman looked around at his men and women enjoying themselves and said, "This Second Annual event is great! The Borders family once again opened up their location out here and, with the help of an army of volunteers from Elizabeth Baptist Church, got it done. It feels good to be appreciated. It shows us that Cleveland County supports its law enforcement offi- cers and that we are a caring community. It's a blessing to know the average citizen supports us and has our backs." The Borders said they plan, the Lord willing, to have this again in 2023.
