New offi cers were recently in- stalled at their meetings. In addition, the SAL immediate past Commander, Dr. Jack Weller, conducted a Flag Day retirement ceremony at the Post dur- ing which he related stories about this day which is so important to patriotic Americans. Dozens of tattered and unserviceable US fl ags were disposed of in an appropriate ceremony follow- ing the program. Post 82 has a fl ag drop-off box located at the front of their building at 1628 S. Lafayette Street and the public is welcome to bring by their tattered US fl ags and deposit them for proper disposal. The American Legion is the nation's oldest and largest veterans service or- ganization, having formed in 1919. The Post, Auxiliary, and SAL will be having a "Super Saturday" Membership drive on Saturday, July 16, 10am-12 Noon, at the Post home on S. Lafayette St. In addition, the Legion Riders – another group which falls under the auspices of the American Legion and is for motor- cycle enthusiasts – will also be present to chat with potential new members. Light refreshments will be served, and representatives of each group will be on hand with information, to accept dues renewals for current members, and to sign up eligible new members. The Shelby American Legion was chartered in 1921 and has been ac- tively involved in serving veterans and the local community since that time. For questions, please email Post82@ yahoo.com.
