Sat. 7/6 Dwight Yoakam 8 p.m. $26-$76 Belleayre Mountain, 181 Galli Curci Road, Highmount. (800) 942-6904, belleayremusic.org One of contemporary country music's most original artists, Dwight Yoakam has defied convention since his 1986 debut album. His latest album, "3 Pears," was included in more "best of" lists at the end of 2012 than any other country album. Wed. 7/10 'The Compleat Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)' 8 p.m. $12 | $15 | $18 Cooperstown Theater Festival, 7163 County Highway 80, Cooperstown. cooperstowntheatrefestival.org If you like Monty Python, you'll love "Shakespeare Abridged," a breakneck-paced rendition of the Bard's greatest hits that's sure to leave you laughing. The play, which debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1987, is known for being tailored to fit each audience and venue, so even if you've seen this side-splitter before, don't miss this rendition. Sun. 7/14 Further 7 p.m. Doubleday Field, Cooperstown 547-9983 cooperstownchamber.org The Grateful Dead played its last show almost 20 years ago, but that hasn't stopped faithful Deadheads from following various incarnations of the legendary 1960s jam band wherever they may roam. Helmed by Dead founding members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, Further represents the latest, greatest incarnation of the band that in many ways defines the 1960s. And they're coming to "America's Most Perfect Village." What will happen? Show up and find out. Photo of Further by PAIRDoc Wed. 7/24 Book signing with author Callie Wright 7 p.m. Free Augur's Bookstore, 73 Main St., Cooperstown Sure, Cooperstown native Callie Wright's debut novel, "Love All," is getting great press from Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Elle and, yes, Oprah. But we're interested in this book because of its subject matter. Wright's novel takes the legendary and very real 1960s pulp pot-boiler "The Sex Cure," allegedly written about the secret sex lives of real-life Bassett doctors, and imagines what would happen if some of that novel's secrets spilled out into the Cooperstown of the 1990s. Yeah. You know you want to read it. Thu. 7/25 Grace Potter & the Nocturnals 7 p.m. $35 | $45 Brewery Ommegang, County Highway 33, Cooperstown ommegang.com Blending blues, folk and rock, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals offer a powerful and energetic brand of music that's all their own. Don't miss this chance to get up close and personal with this powerhouse of a band. Fri. 7/26 Contributed Callie Wright's debut novel, 'Love All,' uses the scandalous 1960s novel 'The Sex Cure' as a jumping-off point for a family drama set in 1990s Cooperstown with plenty of secrets of its own. Wright will sign copies of her book in Cooperstown on July 23 and 24. Iris Dement 8 p.m. $18 | $30 | $34 West Kortright Centre, East Meredith westkc.org Singer-songwriter Iris Dement, who will be joined on this performance by David Jacques on bass, Jon Graboff on pedal steel guitar, Bryan Owings on drums and Jason Wilber on guitar, has won praise from Merle Haggard, the New Yorker and your cool friend who always knows about good music before you do. The Boston Globe called her 2012 album "Sing the Delta" "a work of rare, unvarnished grace and power." Get Scene: Send your events to arts@ thedailystar.com July 3, 2013 O-Town Scene 11
