Or Not I've never been much of a runner, but I always kind of wanted to be. I went from being the fastest kid in my elementary school (which isn't saying much, considering there were only 29 other kids in it) to a mediocre runner in junior high. Nevertheless, I joined the track team, finishing first in a race exactly once during my two seasons. In high school, I would occasionally go for barefoot jogs around the track, only because I didn't have any running shoes. And I went on the occasional morning jog in college. But I never could stick with it. Part of the problem for me is the monotony of running. Of course, that's supposed to be part of its romance, too. You're supposed to be one with your thoughts and your body, undisturbed by anything but the rhythm of your feet hitting the pavement. But being one with my thoughts usually meant being bored out of my skull, which meant I had little left to do but think about how much I wished I was done running. That's why events like the Tuff eNuff obstacle run hold a strong appeal for me. I doubt I could be bored while slogging through a mud pit, or trying to scale a wall. Plus, these "mud runs" are noncompetitive, and seem to have a chaotic and at times even goofy spirit to them, which is a bonus for someone who will undoubtedly be bringing up the rear. I've not entered in this year's inaugural Tuff eNuff event, but who knows? You might see me out there next year. And in the meantime, I'll have fun watching the brave souls who do dare to compete. Photo by Flickr user NathanF Admittedly, this is not everyone's idea of a good time. But it beats running around in circles, if you ask me. If you have pictures to share from Tuff eNuff or any mud run/obstacle race, send them to me at the email address below, or post them to the O-Town Scene's Facebook page. Bonus points for anyone wearing a tutu! Emily F. Popek can be reached at 432-1000, ext. 217, or epopek@ thedailystar.com.
