CYANMAGENTAYELLOWBLACK 23 June 30, 2013 • Honoring Freedom • Supplement to Sunday Gazette-Mail Vietnam veterans sought for '60s HHHS reunion The third annual reunion of Herbert Hoover High School 1960-era graduates this summer will pay special tribute to the classmates who served their country during that time. Carole Booth, of Kanawha City, a 1967 graduate of the Clendenin area school, said that this year's gathering will acknowledge all of the Vietnam-era veterans who attended Hoover. This year's "Back to the '60s" reunion is scheduled for 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at the First Baptist Church in Clendenin. Admission is $20 per person. Rolling Smoke Barbecue is catering the reunion and Hoover graduate Mikey "Hitman" Hayes will be the DJ. The reunion will also feature a 50-50 raffle and a silent auction. Importantly, though, "we decided to have theme of 'Welcome back home' for our Vietnam veteran-era classmates," said Booth. "It's just a special theme of honoring our veterans, who were never honored by the state or the area or the school, and we think it's time. We've got hundreds of classmates [who served in the military]. It's unbelievable how many there are. It's easier to count the ones in our classes that weren't veterans, there were so many of them." As well as '60s-era students who served in the main branches of the Armed Forces, Booth said, the invitation is extended to those who served in the National Guard, Reserves or other military capacity. "It's open to anybody that served," she said. "They didn't have to be in 'nam. It's for anybody that wore a uniform during that time period; we are recognizing them as a veteran — and they are veterans."
