Hughes, from an 1862 photograph, served until 1864 in the Civil War in the Seventh West Virginia Cavalry. He suffered an eye injury at the Battle of Bull Run, was treated at a military hospital in Point Pleasant and returned to active duty. TSgt. Fred H. Chandler, of Clendenin, served in the Army and Army Air Force from July 1, 1939, to Sept. 17, 1945. He served with the 150th Infantry in Panama and Air Training Command, Lowry Field, Denver. This photograph was taken in 1944. Cpl. Orville Hughes, originally from Clay County, served in the Army during the Korean War, from 1951 to 1953. SSgt. Robert Daniel Chandler, of St. Albans, served with the 774th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Clark Air Force Base, the Philippines, South Vietnam, as a C-130B Aircraft Loadmaster. He served in the Air Force from March 1966 to March 1970. William (Bill) Atkins of Nitro served as an A1/C from 1951 to 1955. He enlisted and went to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for basic training. He was then sent to Columbus, Ohio, State School of Trades for training. He served for two-anda-half-years in the Motor Vehicle Squadron at Nagoya Air Base in Nagoya, Japan. During his last year of service, he was at Mather Air Force Base in California. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Kenneth M. Bright, of Winfield, served aboard the Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) in Vietnam. This photograph was taken in 1962. WO-4 Rembrandt Morgan Jr., of Winfield, served with the 10th Mt. Division, 25th Lightning Division in the Pacific Theater. He was in the Army and Air Force from 1942 to 1979. WWII veteran still telling war stories at 93 Sgt. William E. "Pete" Stewart, of Hernshaw and formerly of Bloomingrose, served in World War II from start to finish in the 101st Airborne, F Company, 327th Glider Infantry. He was wounded twice in Germany and Holland, receiving the Purple Heart. Throughout the campaigns, he demonstrated his devotion to duty and outstanding service to his regiment. He served in the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, and, now, at 93, he can still tell stories from World War II. Army Pfc. Charles W. "Doc" Hammonds, whose hometown is Rand, is shown at left with his friends in Vienna, Austria, during World War II. CM Sgt. Bruce Warden with the 130th Airlift Wing, Yeager Airport, Charleston. Warden served in Operation Desert Storm. Air Force Sgt.-Crew Chief C141 Gary Lee Lane, of St. Albans, was with the 62nd Airlift Maintenance Squadron at McChord Air Force Base, Washington. He served from 1966 to 1970. Army Pfc. John Allen Harrah, from Elk Two Mile, Charleston, served in the Korean War with AUS Ameds Co., 95th Infantry. Sgt. E. Cletus Morris, of Pinch, served with the 8th AF, 391st Bomb Squadron, in Europe during World War II. This photograph was taken in 1943. Master Sgt. Clarence A. Wingo, of Belle, served with the Air Force, Naval Reserves and W.Va. Air National Guard. This photograph was taken in 1953 at Keesler Air Force Base. Pfc. Charles Kenneth Rollins, of Red House, served with the 242nd Infantry, 66th Panther Division, Rainbow Division and U.S. Constabulatory Elite Forces in the European Theater in World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. This photograph was taken in 1943. Lance Cpl. Joshua Clark, of St. Albans, is with the Victor 22 Unit of the Marines.
