Young, the son of Jobe and Jessie Young of Glen, is shown receiving a commendation for his expertise as a heavy equipment mechanic for the Air Force. He served in Germany, Vietnam, Labrador, Alaska and several other states. CPO Deward Allen Jarrell Sr. served for more than 20 years in the Navy. Sgt. Jerry Jones, 3rd Platoon, 26 MEU, Camp Lejeune, N.C., Marine Corps. He served in First Company after Sept. 11, 2001, at Kandahar Airport and served Jimmy Estep served in Viet- with the Charleston Police nam with the Army, from Department beginning in April 1966 to April 1969. He September 2009. was killed in action there. Saunie M. McClung, of Glen Ferris, served in the Army during World War I. Robert L. White, of Van, served in the Army during the Korean War. Navy Seaman 1st Class Cecil G. Harper, a resident of Newell, served on various ships during World War II. Army Spc. E-6 William P. Brown received the Bronze Star for heroism in ground combat in Vietnam on Nov. 24, 1963. David A. Hudson served with Co. D., 262 Infantry. He is seen with a fellow soldier at Normandy, France. The late Catarino Jose Carrizales, who served in the Marine Corps, is seen at right. Army Pvt. Clarence A. Kerns, of Higby in Roane County, served in World War I. He died of pneumonia at Camp Mead, Md., on Oct. 6, 1918. Ken Samples (left) shakes hands with his nephew, Joseph Samples. Both served in the Army — Ken from 1963 to 1966 and Joe in Iraq and still serving. Cpl. Harwood H. Squires, son of Dennis and Rhoda Squires of Heaters, served as an M.P at Fort Lawton, . Wash., from 1951 to 1953. Wilford "Bunny" Navy, 1943. Estep, PFC Herman Newman, of Malden, served with Battery B 299-AAA of the Army during World War II. This photo was taken in 1943 in the Aleutian Islands by a cave where Japanese soldiers lived. Newman served for two years on the island of Kiska. Paris Stephens is seen at Parris Island, S.C., in 1942, during basic training. He entered the Marine Corps on Nov. 22, 1942, serving active duty in Samoa and other locales and achieving the rank of corporal. He was sent to China to remove Japanese troops after the war and was discharged in February 1946, never having a leave or weekend pass during his service. Army Pfc. Donald Edward Hunt served in Korea and Germany. Army Pfc. John Wheeler III, of Charleston, is with the 101st Airborne DivisionInfantry, out of Fort Campbell, Ky. He is currently serving in Afghanistan. This photo was taken during a training exercise in Fort Polk, La. Lance Cpl. Hugh A. Bailey Jr., of Charleston, served with the Marine Corps in Vietnam. Marine Lance Cpl. Damon C. Wlodarczyk, of Charleston, served from 1992 to 1996. Pfc. Second Scout and Rifleman Dietrich Pershing Miller, of Bandytown in Boone County, served with the 7th Army, 45th Division, Combat Patrol. He enlisted in February 1944 and was discharged in December 1945. He was captured Oct. 28, 1944, and was a POW for six months in a German prison camp. Air Force Sgts. Danny T. McKee and Michael R. McKee, both from Charleston, served with the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing in Vietnam in January 1969. Pvt. James C. Fizer, of Cannelton, was with the Army 34th Inf. Div., 168 Regt., Co. F. He was wounded on Feb. 11, 1944, at Cassimo, Italy. This photograph was taken in Montgomery in 1944. Marine Pfc. Thomas B. Whittington Sr., of Smithers, served with the 4th Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, from February 1952 to January 1945. Luke Johnson, from Ripley, was with 1st EOD Com. in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011. He is the son of Danny and Glenda Johnson of Ripley.
