B-6 Wednesday, September 15, 2021 The Press-Dispatch PCMS boys' tennis progressing well By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central middle school boys' tennis team has lost three games and tied in one this season, but that has not stopped them from work- ing hard and getting better as the season continues. Head Coach Phil Knust said, "We have a young team this year again, with only two eighth graders on the middle school team. We are gaining some good experience and working at it every match and practice to get better." In the middle school varsi- ty matches against Tecumseh on Tuesday, August 31, JJ Bel- more won 8 -4, Llinkyn Knust lost 1-8 and Tyler Collins lost 2-8 in the singles matches. While in the doubles match- es, Cainan Russell and Joshua Smith lost 0 -8, and Kade Ben- ner and Kody Carter lost 1-8. For the second round of matches against Tecumseh, Tyler Collins lost 0 -6 and Jack- son Brewster lost 2-6 in the singles. While Kade Benner and Blake Houchins lost 1-6 in the doubles. Putting the team at 1-7, and losing to Tecumseh. The next set of matches was against Forest Park on Tuesday, September 7. In the middle school varsity match- es, Eli Keeker lost 4-8, Knust lost 1-8 and Collins lost 0 -8 in the singles. While in the dou- bles, Russell and Gavin Tay- lor lost 0 -8. During the second round of matches, Russell won 6 -4, Taylor lost 0 -6, Knust lost 1- 6 and Collins lost 4-6. While in the doubles, Keeker and Knust lost 1-6, and Taylor and Russell lost 0 -6. Leaving the team with one win and nine losses, and losing in total to Forest Park. The next match played was against Tecumseh again with the varsity matches having Keeker defeated 2-8, Collins defeated by 2-8 and Knust defeated 1-8 in the singles matches. While in the doubles matches, Russell and Brew- ster lost 0 -8, and Benner and Smith lost 1-8. In their second round of matches, Benner lost 2-6 and Brewster lost 3-4. In doubles, Taylor and Smith lost 3-4, Keeker and Collins won 4-0 and Knust and Russell won 4- 0. Leaving the team with a to- tal score of 2-8 and being de- feated by Tecumseh. On Saturday, September 11, the middle school Chargers' hard work started paying off. The Chargers played Vin- cennes Lincoln and tied 4-4. In the varsity matches, Keek- er lost 4-6 and Knust won 6 - 3 in the singles. While in the doubles, Collins and Ben- ner won 6 -2, and Russell and Brewster lost 1-6. In the second round of matches, Knust won 6 -0, Rus- sell won 6 -4 and Brewster lost 0 -6 in the singles. In the dou- bles, Keeker and Collins were defeated 4-6. Coach Knust commented on the team's progress and games, "(The) team has been progressing well. We have had some success and are getting better with each match get- ting more wins." "Our focus at the middle school level is not on winning and losing, but working on our games and getting better, and getting ready for high school tennis. We are seeing some good success from our young- er all-freshman high school tennis team and are excited about this, and looking for- ward to our players moving up to play on the high school team to add some depth to their lineup." Middle school cross country taking home wins this season By Matthew Haycraft The middle school Charger boys' and girls' cross country teams won a four-way meet on Tuesday, September 7 on their home course at Prides Creek. The meet at Prides Creek was between Pike Central, North Daviess, South Spen- cer and Southridge. The middle school girls' cross country took first place with a point total of 26. Kylie Meyer placed second with a time of 12:28, Kyleey Weath- ers placed third with a time of 12:36, Jessa Ridao placed seventh with a time of 13:12, Emiley Ricker placed eighth with a time of 13:27, Ava Mill- er placed ninth with a time of 13:29, Eva Cox placed 14th with a time of 14:06, Ne- al placed 20th with a time of 15:28, Caleigh Cox placed 21st with a time of 15:29, Weit- kamp placed 23rd with a time of 16:04 and Halter placed 35th with a time of 22:25. In the middle school boys' cross country division, Pike Central took home first with a total of 15 points. Charger Jacoby Smith placed fifth with a time of 12:11, Gadber- ry placed seventh with a time of 12:24, DeCoursey placed 11th with a time of 13:36, Ben- ner placed 12th with a time of 14:17 and Joshua Smith placed 13th with a time of 15:27. In the past weeks, Pike Cen- tral Middle School Chargers have had three other meets. On their first meet of the sea- son on Tuesday, August 31, they had a three-way meet at Prides Creek with North Knox and Washington. The girls ended up wining that meet, with their top five run- ners being Meyer with a time of 12:56, Weathers with a time of 13:35, Riker with a time of 13:39, Ridao with a time of 13:47 and Miller with a time of 14:07. The boys in this meet had three boys running who end- ed with good times: Gadber- ry with a time of 12:44, Jaco- by Smith with a time of 13:50 and Taylor Russell with a time of 14:18. Their second meet of the year was on Thursday, Sep- tember 2 in a three-way meet against Washington and North Daviess at Washington. The girls' team won this meet as well, while the boys' team only had four runners, so they did not score, due to needing five runners to place. Charger cross country also participated in a big 22-team invitational at Gibson South- ern on Saturday, September 4. The girls' team finished seventh overall, with their top seven placers being Mey- er with a time of 13:34, Riker with a time of 13:34, Weath- ers with a time of 13:43, Rid- ao with a time of 14:18, Miller with a time of 14:49, Eva Cox with a time of 15:04 and Ca- leigh Cox with a time of 16:40. The boys' team finished 17th in the invitational, with their top placers being Gad- berry with a time of 12:58, Jacoby Smith with a time of 13:03, DeCoursey with a time of 14:17, Benner with a time of 14:55, Russell with a time of 15:13 and Joshua Smith with a time of 15:32. Head Coach Luke Cox said, "The kids are doing really well this year. We started practic- ing in mid-June and it's really showing how much hard work these kids have put in. All the kids have really good attitudes and know what they need to do when it comes to practice and race day." Charger Alivia Weit- kamp running in the middle school cross country meet on Thurs- day, September 9. She placed 23rd with a time of 16:04.
