Submitted photo Chargers volleyball loses to the Raiders By Matthew Haycraft Lady Chargers' varsity vol- leyball team lost to Southridge Tuesday, September 7 at Pike Central in three sets, scoring 23-25, 19 -25, 15 -25. Pike Central senior Jaize Mills had 17 digs, four kills and one block for the game. While Erika Vinnedge, Char- ger senior, had two aces, nine kills, one block and two as- sists. Charger sophomore Hai- lye Fulcher ended the game with one ace, six kills and one assist; and Eve Burns, Char- ger freshman, had 11 digs and one kill. Head Coach Stephanie Shedd stated, "The girls played well. We just couldn't quite get on top and stay on top. We covered attacks well and dove after everything. We will continue to work on keeping the momentum on our side, and pushing forward when we get on top." The girls' junior varsity also played the Southridge Raiders Saturday and lost, winning the second set, but losing the first and third sets. In the first set of the game, the JV were lacking their com- munication, but corrected it in the next set. During the sec- ond set, the team seemed to get their groove together and had good communication and teammate awareness, win- ning the set by a score of 25 - 22. While playing the third set, the girls fought hard, but could not seem to get the points together to make the win. But the Chargers played hard, never giving up the fight the entire match. During this game, Fulcher ended up with four kills and two digs; Kavanaugh with one ace, two digs and nine as- sists; junior Delaney Welch had three digs. The girls played one more game for the tourney and it was against Evansville Reitz, who ended up winning the game, putting the Lady Char- gers out of the tourney. Coach Shedd said, "Reitz is an all-around great team, with strong hitting and serv- ing. We started off slow, but I was very proud of our accom- plishments during the second set. We started off strong and were ahead. We stuck with them the entire match and gave it our all. We had great serving and played smart." Kavanaugh had four aces, one dig and five assists; and Vinnedge had two blocks, two aces and three digs. The team as a whole had seven aces and 19 digs. Coach Shedd wrapped up the tourney saying, "We won our pool and then placed 3rd overall. I am very pleased with our performance today. Our hard work is paying off as we add wins to our record." The Pike Central Lady Chargers are now 4-6 for the season. They will play their next game at Boonville on Thursday, September 16.
