If you need evidence, just turn to Page 7. I kind of wanted to be cool in junior high (who doesn't?) and made a half-hearted attempt to dress and look like the popular kids. But it just didn't work out for me. At heart, I was a nerdy, weird kid, and my efforts to disguise that fact were pretty pathetic. Fortunately, I had an older sister, who imparted to me the most earth-shattering, significant words any pre-teen has ever heard: "You don't have to dress like everybody else, you know." That simple sentence started me on a quest. I went back to school that fall wearing, not a pair of knockoff Guess? jeans, but a pair of tights that were fluorescent green on one leg, and purple on the other. Along the way, there were a few missteps, which I write about in my column on Page 7. And I learned that, by standing out rather than fitting in, I was sending signals to others like me. I'll never forget the day a boy I barely knew talked to me because of the band T-shirt I was wearing. We became good friends, and even wound up going to shows together to see, not only that band, but a host of others. It was at those concerts that we started to find the rest of our tribe — the kids from other schools who ventured out to hear punk, ska, hardcore and alternative music at places like the local Lions Club. As I grew older, I often wondered who was behind the scenes at some of the venues I frequented. In this issue, you'll get to meet the people behind two local music venues This flier shows the lineup for one of the first shows I ever went to. who are bringing bands to the area. Check them out on Pages 8-9. Anything that gives people a way to connect with their tribe is good by me. Emily F. Popek is interim editor of the O-Town Scene.
