...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE SUMMER 2013 Dawn Reiss Credentials: Dawn Reiss is a Chicago native who has eaten crickets in Cambodia, interviewed Maya Angelou, and spent two years covering the trial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich for Time. After starting her career as a sports reporter at The Dallas Morning News and St. Petersburg Times, she still enjoys the competitive nature of any industry. Behind the story: "Il Mostro ["Sail Away," page 122] is even more impressive in person. Even hanging in midair, surrounded by three stories of scaffolding, you can feel the raw power of this boat." Chicago loves: "Biking the lakefront, and having a drink at Hopleaf Bar." Peter Hoffman John Dugan Credentials: John Dugan is a Chicago-based freelance writer and the editor of Pitchfork's visual culture website nothingmajor.com. Formerly the senior Web editor at Time Out Chicago and music/nightlife editor at chicago.citysearch.com, Dugan has interviewed everyone from Pete Townshend and Paul Weller to Noah Wyle and Ian Schrager. Behind the story: "Ramsey Lewis ["Major Players," page 116] had a great story about getting stuck with a bum piano for a gig on a boat when a Steinway was promised, then watching George Shearing promptly blast out an amazing set on it. 'What I learned is that you gotta stay with who you are musically, and you could make the instrument sing,' he told me. As someone who has had to play on drum kits held together with duct tape, I could relate." Chicago loves: "I love the boulevards and parks, the range of architecture, and the overall metropolitan feel. Many neighborhoods maintain their own character with their own set of perennial must-sees, local landmarks, and secret gems— there are lots of pockets left to discover." 32 Credentials: After launching his career at the Aurora Beacon-News, freelance photographer Peter Hoffman has contributed to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, The Fader, The Guardian, Monocle Magazine, and more. Behind the story: "Seeing the sleeping quarters for the il Mostro crew ["Sail Away," page 122] was pretty humbling. Having to sleep like that night after night on one of the trips around the world that this boat has done—it gives you a lot of respect for the people who embark on that journey." Chicago loves: "I like to surf Lake Michigan when it gets especially stormy in the fall, and paddleboard in the summer." Brian Bowen Smith Credentials: Brian Bowen Smith was introduced to photography after catching the eye of legendary photographer Herb Ritts, who cast Smith—a former pro skater—as a model in a Gap campaign. After assisting Ritts for four years, Smith started shooting on his own for Premiere, Vogue, Interview, Esquire, and more. Smith recently released his second book, Projects, of black and white celebrity portraits. Behind the story: "I was enthralled by Michelle Williams's enthusiasm ["Destined for Greatness," page 102]. She fully trusted me, and she was cool." Chicago loves: "Nothing beats Chicago's outdoor festivals in the summer." MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 032_MA_FOB_Contribs_Summer13.indd 32 6/18/13 11:56 AM
